From Smoking Cessation to Diabetes Care: Babul’s Pharmacist-Led Research Shapes Patient Outcomes

Nazia Somani Babul, PharmD, BCACP, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy and a clinical pharmacist at UI Health Specialty Care Building Pharmacy, CommunityHealth, West Town, speaks about her research journey and its impact on patient care. Her work centers on underserved and low-income populations, particularly patients at CommunityHealth and UI Health, with studies demonstrating improved smoking cessation rates when patients were provided access to ni****ne replacement therapy alongside counseling.

On December 20th, CommunityHealth hosted a holiday mindful crafting event where patients and volunteers came together to enjoy a warm beverage, make ornaments, and participate in workshops on mental health during the busy holiday season. We had a wonderful time sharing laughter, singing carols, and taking a moment to relax before the holidays ❄️✨

This week, we opened our fourth microsite, CommunityHealth at Rincon Family Services This new microsite clinic offers a variety of essential health care services, including primary care visits, specialty care visits, lab work, medication pickup, and referrals to dental and specialty care to uninsured adults in the neighborhood.

“We are choosing hope, that is what this location is about… This is transformational to the communities that we serve. Here, people will be able to access services they, in the past, may have had to leave their communities to get,” said CommunityHealth CEO Steph Willding. “All of those services will be provided completely free to uninsured patients.”

CommunityHealth hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 16, which included speeches from the AbbVie Foundation, 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodríguez, State Senator, Graciela Guzmán for 20th District State Senator First Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services Jonah Anderson and a representative from Congresswoman Delia Ramirez's office.

In 2025, we have registered over 1800 new patients!

The demand for CommunityHealth’s services is only increasing. Our incredible team of volunteers provided an average of 2,180 appointments each month this year.

Currently, clinic volunteers outnumber clinic staff 44:1. Our volunteer-based clinic model is amazing because it allows CommunityHealth to respond rapidly to the needs of our patients. It is thanks to our volunteers that we were able to increase the number of appointments provided this year.
