Dramatic play, like playing house or pirates or super heroes or any other type of “putting on” of a character or different personality, can help your child release tension and work out fears and hesitation about real-life situations such as going to the doctor. It also helps them gain conflict resolution skills, explore their emotions and develop impulse control.

A new study published in Acta Paediatrica argues TV or other media can stunt a child’s language development.

Kids “plopped in front of videos for hours on end tend to use phrases and sentences with fewer words, researchers reported.” The study also showed “that toddlers spend an average of nearly two hours a day watching videos.”

OUCH - no screens until the age of two, and just one hour a day at the most!

It’s a perfect day for messy play! Get your child outside and let them play in the dirt, sand and mud!

Messy play helps develop your child's sensory processing skills and strengthens their nervous systems. Exploring all kinds of textures helps their brains learn to adapt to future sensory inputs, at school or at home.

Did you know that independent play - your child playing by themselves - has valuable benefits for social and emotional development? Yes!

Your child comes up with all the ideas and puts them into action - their imagination explodes! They develop storylines with beginnings, middles and ends.

They learn self-confidence and self-sufficiency while developing skills to achieve self-contentment, a priceless skill as they grow into adulthood.

Use sensory toys to distract kids on the verge of a meltdown, instead of using screens. Keep handy toys with bright colors, parts that spin or rattle, or with different textures. Fidget spinners, stress balls, strings of beads and putty are perfect distractions that help kids learn to self-soothe without screens.

Have you heard of grounding exercises? They can really help your child in stressful and upsetting situations. Talk your child through it several times when they are beginning to lose control and soon, they will be able to do it themselves, or with a gentle reminder.

Ask your child to tell you 5 things they can see, 4 things they can hear, 3 things they can feel, 2 things they can smell and 1 thing they can taste.

Could this be diagnostic tool for autism?
“An MRI study published in JAMA Network Open found that infants with enlarged perivascular spaces have more than a twofold increased likelihood of developing autism.”
Perivascular spaces, also known as Virchow-Robin spaces, are fluid-filled structures found throughout the brain.
“The researchers suggest that perivascular spaces could serve as an early marker for autism, with the study revealing a strong association between enlarged perivascular spaces, disrupted cerebrospinal fluid dynamics during sleep and the subsequent development of autism in infants.”

When your child is on the verge of a meltdown, ask them to identify their emotions. Older kids can use words like “angry”, “frustrated” or “sad.” You can use a color chart with littler kids, using red, black, blue, purple, orange and other colors.

Making that color chart with your child before meltdowns happen can also help you both talk through emotions and their triggers - and how to avoid a meltdown altogether.

Worried about sensory processing in your child? Keep them away from screens as much as possible.

JAMA Pediatrics recently published, “For children under the age of 2, television screen time is associated with sensory differences later in toddlerhood, according to a new study.” Notably, “children who watched any television or DVDs at 12 months of age were twice as likely by 36 months to experience ‘atypical sensory processing’ ... compared to others of that age.” According to the research, “after 18 months of age, each extra hour of screen exposure per day was associated with around a 20% increased likelihood of sensory processing differences.”
