Seven correctional health professionals are stepping into a new role with NCCHC as surveyors, helping advance quality and accountability across the field.

After completing a 12-hour training grounded in NCCHC’s Standards and survey process, they’ll move into hands-on work — shadowing experienced surveyors, then leading surveys themselves.

Welcome to:

• Tekia Hamilton, PharmD, BCPS, CCHP
• Karan Hunjan, EMT, LPN, CCHP
• Anya Nevarez, LCSW, CCHP-MH
• Michael Nicholson, RN
• Natasha Roybal, BSN, RN, CCHP
• Shawn Marie Todd, MS, RN, CCHP-N
• Faith Tudor, MSN, NP, CCHP

As more facilities pursue accreditation, the need for experienced, thoughtful surveyors continues to grow. This work is about more than compliance — it’s about raising the standard of care. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4sm7YU8

Today, on Transgender Day of Visibility, we’re highlighting NCCHC’s Position Statement on the care of transgender and gender-diverse individuals in correctional settings.

The statement outlines clear expectations for clinical practice, including that attempts to change a person’s gender identity—often referred to as conversion or “reparative” therapy—should not be used. Care should be evidence-based, clinically appropriate, and responsive to individual patient needs.

Antibiotic resistance doesn’t stop at the prison gate.

NCCHC’s new position statement on antimicrobial stewardship highlights the importance of responsible antibiotic use in correctional settings—and the broader impact on public health.

These systems are deeply connected. What happens inside matters outside. Stewardship is essential to patient safety, quality care, and long-term health outcomes.

Behind every strong health care system are people willing to guide the next generation.

Students and early-career professionals often want to enter the field — but finding experienced professionals to learn from can be challenging.

The NCCHC Foundation’s new Preceptorship Portal and Workforce Development Hub helps bring people together. Through a national directory of volunteer preceptors, experienced correctional health professionals can share their knowledge and help future clinicians grow.

When professionals support one another, the entire field becomes stronger — and so does the care provided to people in custody.

If this work matters to you, we hope you’ll share this story with your community.

Today’s jail leaders are operating in an increasingly complex environment.

Facilities are caring for people with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and chronic medical conditions — often while managing staffing shortages, tight budgets, and growing public scrutiny. Research shows that incarcerated populations tend to have higher rates of chronic disease, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders than the general population.

In a recent article for Correctional News, Richard Forbus discusses how technology can help correctional leaders strengthen operations, improve documentation, and reduce liability risk.

From telehealth and electronic health records to monitoring systems and data analytics, modern tools can support staff and help facilities respond more effectively when every minute matters.

National Sheriffs’ Association Affirms Commitment to Women’s Health Care in Jails
NSA has adopted a new resolution supporting access to comprehensive, evidence-based maternal and women’s health care in the nation’s jails—an important affirmation of the shared responsibility to protect the health and safety of incarcerated women, their children, and correctional staff.
NCCHC is pleased to work cooperatively with NSA on these critical issues. NSA has a representative on NCCHC’s Board of Representatives, reflecting an ongoing partnership between correctional leaders and health professionals committed to constitutionally acceptable care in jails and prisons
