Do you adapt your yoga practice to your body, or does your body adapt to your yoga practice? 🤔

I’ve been practicing yoga since 2007, and my practice has changed drastically over the years. Initially, I stumbled upon a yoga class at the gym due to a herniated disc in my lower lumbar. At that point, learning to move my body properly and give it rest was crucial. Later, when trying to conceive, I discovered that adjusting my yoga practice to fertility-friendly posture, breathing, and mantras was beneficial. Once pregnant and postpartum, I made further adjustments to open my body and mind to welcoming a baby and exploring the various ways yoga can support you during these stages. Now, in perimenopause, I’m using my yoga knowledge to create strength, stability, and stamina while navigating hormonal changes through specific poses and lifestyle changes.

How to use your yoga practice to build stress resilience 😌 🐌

10/10/2025

Today I’m sharing a breathing technique called Ujjahi pranayama. This breath supports your vagal tone.

If you’re unsure what that is and why you should care, visit my prior reel on it 😉.

Ujjayi breath, also called “victorious breath” or “ocean breath,” is a breathing technique often used in yoga. It involves slow, deep, and controlled inhalations and exhalations through the nose with a slight constriction of the throat, producing a soft “haaa” sound.

🫁 Stimulates the Vagus Nerve: Slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system via the vagus nerve.
🫀Improves Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Enhanced vagal tone leads to better HRV, which is a marker of good autonomic nervous system balance.
😌 Promotes Relaxation: The technique encourages mindfulness and calm, reducing stress and anxiety.

✨ Ready to practice it yourself?
Meet me on the yoga mat each Monday and Friday morning at 9 am. Private beach area near Casa Del Mar in Key
Biscayne.

How to Practice Ujjayi Breath for Vagal Tone
1. Sit comfortably with a straight spine.
2. Slightly constrict the back of your throat (as if you’re fogging a mirror softly) so you can hear a gentle ocean-like sound.
3. Inhale deeply and slowly through your nose.
4. Exhale slowly and steadily through your nose with the same constriction, maintaining the sound.
5. Keep your breath smooth, steady, and even.
6. Practice for 5-10 minutes daily, gradually increasing duration.

Yoga, a practice with a rich and ancient history spanning over 5,000 years, some even claim it goes back 10,000 years!

Did you know that the asanas, the physical postures of yoga, were originally designed for men?

The next time you find yourself struggling to push yourself into a pose that doesn’t align with your body on a particular day, take note and make adjustments as needed. 😉

✨Join my yoga classes that are held every Monday and Friday morning at 9 am in Key Biscayne at a private beach area that are designed for women 🌊 🌴
