The year was 1935 when Tom Gibbons’ father opened the first Gibbons Funeral Home on the west side of Chicago. Today there are three Gibbons Funeral Homes, all family owned and operated. The Elmhurst location was founded in 1960, and the firm on the northwest side of Chicago was established in 1973. The Gibbons family also owns and operates The Oaks Funeral Home in Itasca, founded in 1987.

NEEDING TO ADAPT IS AN ONGOING PROCESS

Things change. People change. Customs change. Circumstances change. Whey they do; we change.

Michael Gibbons always shares that his father, Tom Gibbons, was "always ahead of his time". His father recognized before nearly anyone else when desires were changing, based on his outstanding observation and listening skills. Learning of new preferences and trends of how people preferred to celebrate the lives of their loved ones, he implemented them in an ongoing process at each of his funeral homes. There were the constants; better parking, more comfortable restrooms, a lounge that had all of the amenities family's needed for their guests. Brighter visitation spaces. Soft furniture, not folding chairs.

Beyond those more obvious updates, there has been technology, lighting and furnishings that increased the level of ambiance and comfort. Many things people could "feel", without being sure what made this environment such a warm and comforting one.

It’s not so rare to hear the term “alternative funeral arrangements” these days, and its definition varies widely. From preferring the services and rites in the funeral chapel. rather than processing to a place of worship. Some even preferring to host their funeral luncheon in the funeral home lounge with catering options, added to the roster of resources the Gibbons Family Funeral Home provides. Simply put "We adapt and we're committed to listening and watching for anything we can do to make this experience more meaningful" states Michael, with a sense of obligation and pride reflecting his father's mantra. .

We have the flexibility and the space to accommodate what people ask for.
