Working with older adults is more than a career, it’s a passion that started when I was just a little girl. In middle school, I asked my parents to enroll me in the Adopt a Grandparent, a program that pairs up an older adult with a student in the community. I loved visiting and listening to their
stories and anecdotes. I remember I used to visit this woman who used to keep small containers of jelly in her bedside drawer, and every time I’d stop by, she would open her secret drawer, and let me take one. Despite my young age, I knew my adoptive grandparents had so much wisdom, knowledge and value to give to the world, but it seemed to me that nobody knew about them. I felt a special bond with them and wanted to do more. In High School, I also helped take care of my grandfather who was living with Parkinson’s Disease. I used to come by and help my grandmother who often needed a break. So, every day after school, and on weekends, I would go straight over to their house. My grandmother could go out and run errands, grocery shop or simply have her own free time. During this time, I’d feed my grandfather, assist with other activities of daily living, provided stand-by assistance when he could still walk, take him for car rides (when he was still able to get into the car and was still somewhat mobile). My grandfather had been a cattle rancher his whole life and after he was unable to actively be involved in the business, he still wanted to see the ranch and cattle so I’d drive him through the fields so he could survey the land and feel reassured that everything was being taken care of in the manner which he was accustomed. It was very difficult to witness his deterioration from this disease and the frustration that he lived with on a daily basis. I always wanted to ensure that he felt safe and that things were going to be just fine. Helping my grandfather solidified my calling to want to pursue nursing school and later care management.
