I recently encountered a woman working in the bakery department at a local store. I noticed she was limping noticeably, and as a physical therapist, I couldn’t help but ask about it. She explained that her knee was bothering her, but she was relying on going to the gym to work on it. I suggested physical therapy might help, but she dismissed it, saying the gym was enough.

A month later, I saw her again—still limping, and this time, it looked even worse. I couldn’t help but feel concerned. It’s possible she had tried something in the past that didn’t work, which made her hesitant to try therapy. But here’s the thing: therapy isn’t just about quick fixes. It’s about learning to listen to your body, understanding what it needs, and being invested in your own healing process.

The gym isn’t always the right answer, especially when pain is involved. It’s important to address the underlying cause of the pain and approach it with a tailored plan. Therapy can offer real, lasting relief by teaching you how to move and heal correctly, without relying on medications or hoping that something will magically work.

I want to be clear: I wasn’t trying to change her into a patient—she wasn’t close to my practice, and that’s okay. But I couldn’t help but offer a suggestion, knowing that the right professional care could make a huge difference in her healing journey.

If you’re in pain and the gym or medication hasn’t helped, don’t settle. It’s time to invest in your body and find the right care that can lead to real healing. Pain doesn’t have to be a constant. Take control and get the help you deserve.
