The Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being is Fourth Presbyterian Church’s response to the mental health needs of its congregation and community. The Center’s unique blend of staff from a variety of disciplines enables it to respond to individuals’ concerns. This response is enhanced by the Center’s role as a ministry of Fourth Church, which means that all spiritual issues are valued and al

l religious orientations respected. The Counseling Center was established in 1976 by Founding Director John Boyle and through the support of Luther I. Replogle, a long-time member and officer of Fourth Presbyterian Church, and named in honor of his wife, Lorene. Since its founding, the Center has expanded its range of services, growing in both size of staff and number of persons seeking help. The Center derives its support from fees, ongoing contributions, and the support of the mission budget of Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Break Free From Stress! Stress researchers have documented various brain states associated with different levels of stress arousal. Research from Elissa Epel and her team at the University of California, San Francisco summarized much of this research on brain states, describing four distinct levels of arousal.

In a fast-paced world where we are confronted by stress and uncertainty around every corner, research illustrates that simple practices rooted in culture and religion can offer some respite: as enablers of connection and belonging. From gatherings for Shabbat dinners in Jewish traditions with a focus on gratitude and unity, to Seva in Sikhism where selfless service fosters humility, rituals have the power to be more than just spiritual – they can enhance mental well-being by making us feel positive emotions.

Know who you really are, and learn to honor yourself. We all fake it from time to time and once in a while, this can be a good thing, but never compromise your personal values and always strive to be your best self.

Is your relationship feeling crossover stress? When your partner is going through a stressful time at work, it’s common for you to be affected by it, too (and vice versa). Sometimes it can even feel as intense as if you were experiencing it firsthand. That experience is called crossover workplace stress (or trauma)—a term that researchers use to describe how work stress gets passed from one partner to another.

A Note from Lisa:
"After 49 years of dedicated service, the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being—where our weekly meditation group began—will be closing on June 30, 2025. For nearly five decades, the Center has been a refuge of healing, insight, and connection. Our meditation group was born there in 2014, lovingly founded by Dr. Ruth Mayer. I joined just a few months later and have been honored to both sit in community with many of you and to help carry the torch forward.

Though the Center is closing, our sangha will continue—and I believe, thrive. Our weekly, virtual meditation group will carry on with a slightly new rhythm:

We’ll begin with a short mindfulness talk,
Sit together in 20 minutes of shared silence,
And close with open-hearted community sharing—whether about the talk, the sit, or your practice in general.

We meet every Thursday evening from 6-7pm CT
In a world that feels increasingly fragmented, these quiet, meaningful moments of connection matter deeply. If you haven’t joined us in a while—or ever—now is a beautiful time to start. All are welcome."

We can all find ways to improve how we cope with stress, since it’s impossible to eliminate it. And when we do, we become more resilient to future stress and mitigate some of the long-term health outcomes of chronic stress, like hypertension, dementia, anxiety and depression, impaired learning and memory, diabetes, and gut conditions. Learn How to Reduce Stress in 5 Minutes.
