The aim of the Gender Journey Project is to find out more information about transgender and gender diverse children’s understanding of their gender, mental health, and in what ways their parents and family influence their wellbeing. The study team is recruiting youth at least 6 years old who identify as transgender or gender diverse and have not yet started puberty. This is an 18-month study that is taking place virtually. Virtual study visits with the youth will occur every 6 months with a series of surveys and questionnaires. This is a paid research opportunity. If you are interested in learning more about the study, contact the research coordinator, Anna Rose Peck-Block, LCSW at apeckblock@luriechildrens.org or 312-227-8372

September is Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month.
-
What is Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS)? PCOS is a common health concern that can affect young people who have a uterus. PCOS can cause irregular periods, heavier periods, or even prevent someone from having their period. PCOS can also cause someone to have excess hair and acne.
-
What are symptoms of PCOS? You or someone you know might have PCOS and should consider seeing a healthcare provider if they experience irregular periods with:
Weight gain or difficulty maintaining a normal weight
Extra hair on the face, chest, belly area, ni**le area, or back
Thinning hair
Acne and clogged pores
Thick and darkened skin around the neck, breasts, or armpits
High blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes
-
What causes PCOS? Healthcare providers aren’t sure what causes PCOS, but believe it is related to a hormonal imbalance in people who have a uterus.
-
How is PCOS treated? While PCOS does not have a cure, there are several ways to treat and manage it. Sometimes a doctor might recommend taking birth control pills. These can help with regulating your period, hair growth, and acne.
For those who are concerned about weight, a doctor might recommend increasing physical activity and making some modifications to your food choices. Managing weight in a healthy and safe way can be helpful in managing PCOS symptoms.
Another medication that might be prescribed by a doctor is called antiandrogens which can help with acne and excess hair.
Lastly, sometimes doctors prescribe a medication called Metformin, which can help lower insulin levels. Sometimes this helps with regulating someone’s period and androgen levels.
-
What should I do if I think I have PCOS or need support for managing my PCOS? Start with talking to your doctor about your concerns. They can support you with navigating care and provide referrals to specialists if needed.

Today's questions is: "Can I use spit as l**e?”
-
First things first, what is l**e? L**e (short for "lubricant") is a liquid or gel used to reduce friction and/or irritation during ma********on or penetrative s*x*
-
Does spit make good l**e? Spit does not make very good l**e because it dries quickly and can cause irritation. Using spit as l**e can also transfer STIs* from the mouth or throat. This includes STIs like bacterial vaginosis* and re**al gonorrhea*. Consider using water, silicone, or oil-based l**e instead of spit.
-
Silicone-based l**e is made using silicone and often designed to last for a long time. It is safe with condoms but not safe to use with silicone s*x toys as they will break down the materials s*x toys are made of.
-
Water-based l**e is made with water soluble ingredients, meaning they will dissolve in water. It is safe with s*x toys and condoms, but generally not a good choice for s*x in the shower, pool, or bathtub as the water will dissolve the l**e.
-
Oil-based l**e is made from oils (usually ones from plants or other organic sources). It is long lasting and waterproof and can be used with s*x toys, but cannot be used with condoms as they will break down the condoms.
-
Sometimes people still just want to use spit though… Some people find it fun or pleasurable to use spit as l**e during s*x. Here are some tips for how to make using spit as l**e a little bit safer if you choose to do so:
1.) Make sure you and your partner(s) are getting tested frequently. (Include testing for oral STIs using throat swabs.)
2.) Don’t use spit as l**e (or have oral s*x or kiss) if you have an active cold sore*
3.) Use l**e in addition to spit
4.) Instead of spitting on the ge****ls or anus/butthole, consider spitting or drooling on other parts of the body like the breasts, chest, or butt cheeks

It’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will circulate together this fall & winter. Make sure you're up-to-date on your vaccines to prevent illnesses.
-
IMPORTANT: The flu vaccine prevents influenza disease, but it does not prevent COVID-19. Only COVID-19 specific vaccines can prevent COVID-19.
