We are proud to share a new publication from our faculty in collaboration with the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network: “Content Validity of a Patient-Reported Measure of Postoperative Recovery,” published in American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS).

Led by Dr. Margaret Mueller as part of a federally funded, national multicenter trial, this study advances our understanding of recovery in women undergoing pelvic floor surgery.

Despite growing emphasis on faster recovery after minimally invasive surgery, urogynecology has lacked a simple, validated way to measure how patients perceive their postoperative recovery. Through cognitive interviews with 63 women following surgery for pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence, the team confirmed patient understanding of a single, pragmatic question:

“𝘛𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘺?”

Findings support this patient-centered measure as a meaningful and practical tool for future urogynecologic clinical trials.

Congratulations to Drs. Margaret Mueller, James Griffith, Kimberly Kenton and their coauthors on this important contribution to patient-centered outcomes research.

Residency and fellowship are essential parts of graduate medical education, built on hands-on training, long hours and real responsibility. Thank a Resident & Fellow Day, launched by the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2018, recognizes the impact residents and fellows make every day.

The UChicago Medicine OB/GYN Department is fortunate to have 31 exceptional residents and 14 outstanding fellows whose contributions touch every part of our department. We are so grateful for all of their hard work and dedication!

New research from the Al-Hendy Lab, published in Endocrine Reviews, highlights emerging evidence that vitamin D sufficiency may reduce uterine fibroid risk and could offer a promising nonhormonal approach to help stabilize fibroid growth and symptoms. Larger randomized trials are still needed to confirm benefit and define optimal dosing.

UChicago Medicine OB/GYN had an outstanding presence at the 2026 Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Annual Meeting, with faculty, fellows, residents and medical students contributing across poster sessions and expert forums.

Our team presented research addressing:
- Health outcomes and management strategies for second-trimester induction of labor
- Social determinants of health and vaccine uptake during pregnancy
- Neurological and urological health associated with in utero myelomeningocele repair

These projects reflect our department’s commitment to generating evidence to improve reproductive health services.

In addition to research presentations, UChicago faculty contributed thought leadership in expert forums:
- Dr. Bridget Huysman spoke on building community partnerships to improve abortion care later in pregnancy
- Dr. Andrew Rausch discussed the utility of first-trimester ultrasound in detecting congenital anomalies and placental abnormalities
- Dr. Neha Bhardwaj discussed leveraging MFM and CFP leadership to drive safer, patient-centered institutional practices
- Dr. Ashish Premkumar spoke about holistic options following a 24-week diagnosis of a severe fetal anomaly

We are proud of the breadth of scholarship and leadership demonstrated by our team at SMFM 2026. From advancing fetal therapy outcomes to strengthening abortion care and maternal health equity, UChicago Medicine continues to contribute meaningful research and national dialogue in maternal-fetal medicine.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Andrew Rausch on his appointment as Director of Ultrasound for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UChicago Medicine.
