Hair restoration trends are evolving - and so are patient needs.

📊 According to the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 40% of members reported an increase in transgender hair transplant procedures in 2024, reflecting a growing demand for gender-affirming care.

Additional global insights:

-The average ISHRS physician treated 668 patients in 2024 (surgical + non-surgical)
-Non-surgical treatments continue to rise, with strong growth since 2021
-Hair loss remains primarily driven by genetic factors (70.9%), but patient motivations are increasingly diverse

As the field advances, inclusivity, innovation, and physician-led care remain at the center of delivering safe, personalized outcomes.

There are only 3 FDA-cleared treatments for hair loss.
Most patients know two of them.

Low level laser therapy, also known as red light therapy or photobiomodulation, has been clinically used since the 1960s. No side effects. FDA-cleared for both safety and efficacy. And when combined with minoxidil or finasteride, the results are multiplicative, not just additive.

Dr. Bob Leonard has been using it in his practice for 35 years. His clinical observations: 90% stabilization of hair loss progression. 60% regrowth of miniaturized hairs.

Dr. Sara Wasserbauer puts it simply: "It's not smoke and mirrors. It's one of those things we have scientific evidence for really working."

Vitamin D Deficiency and Hair Loss: A Case Study

Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem and many people do not get enough vitamin D because of limited sun exposure or a diet low in vitamin D-rich foods. While it is well known for bone and immune health, it also plays a role in the health of your hair.

In an open access publication in ISHRS Hair Transplant Forum, Dr. Sharon Keene shares a case about a 41-year-old man with severe hair thinning. Testing showed he had a very low vitamin D level.

After six months of taking vitamin D3 supplements, his follow-up photos showed significant new hair growth. Interestingly, the patient had not used hair loss medications like minoxidil or finasteride.

📊The 2025 ISHRS Practice Census reveals how an individualized consult in hair loss matters far more than age alone.

Hair transplant surgeons approach age differently depending on the patient, with 80% of members reporting no upper age cutoff for older patients when overall health allows. Additionally, 66.1% require patients beyond a certain age to obtain medical clearance before performing surgery.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum, hair transplant surgeons take a more cautious approach with younger patients. 73% of members report having a minimum age requirement, and 57.6% of their first-time procedures occur in patients between 26–35 years old.

Together, the data underscores a consistent theme across generations: patient safety, timing, and individualized assessment guide care at every stage of life.

🔍Have you been enjoying these Practice Census insights? These highlights are just a preview of a much richer, data-driven report.
