A huge THANK YOU to Target for donating care packages. These packages mean so much to the individuals and families we serve. They provide essential items, but more importantly, they bring comfort, encouragement, and a sense of being cared for. It’s acts of kindness like this that remind us we’re not alone—our community truly shows up.

We appreciate you, Target, for helping us spread hope every day!

Black history is American history, a story of perseverance, innovation, courage, and community. As we reflect on the sacrifices and achievements of those who came before us, we are committed to ensuring the next generation understands the shoulders upon which they stand.

We recently received five children’s books highlighting the contributions of 41 influential African Americans, and at our Black History Month Luncheon at Independence House today, we will give these books to five youth.

“I hope these stories will spark curiosity, build pride, and encourage our young people to see themselves as future leaders, innovators, and change-makers,” said Yaisa Hagood, Executive Director.

This month saw a SSCOH board member retire from our Board of Directors.

The contribution Deidre Freeman made during her tenure played a pivotal role in pushing our work to provide housing and supportive services to women and children in Chicago forward.

We are endlessly grateful for her time on our board! Thank you, Deidre!

Teen dating violence doesn’t happen in isolation. For many young people, unhealthy relationships are closely connected to substance use, coercion, and coping through drugs or alcohol.

At Southside Center of Hope, we know that exposure to violence at a young age can increase the risk of substance use and addiction later in life. Prevention starts with education, safe spaces, and support for teens and their families.

This month, we’re raising awareness, breaking cycles, and reminding our community that hope, healing, and healthy relationships are possible.

In case you've missed the email announcements, we have exciting news!

In 2026, Southside Center of Hope is purchasing a building to reopen a transitional housing program dedicated to serving mothers in recovery!

This building will fill a desperate need: currently, there are no family recovery-focused transitional programs for women on the South Side of Chicago.

Almost daily, we receive referrals from organizations who remember the quality of our past programs and desire to send us women who urgently need housing and recovery support. It is heartbreaking to have to turn them down.

Though these are uncertain times, we are moving forward with confidence rooted not in our own strength, but in faith and hope.

It's because of the faithful support of our donors and partners that we feel confident to take this bold step in a challenging time.

And stay tuned for updates throughout the year! We're excited to share our progress on this big step with you.
