The momentum building of April has led to a bursting forth in May.

We are part-way between Spring and Summer, and life is blooming in every direction. Now is the time to awaken all the parts of us that have been resting.

This has also been a time of stress and uncertainty. But I have noticed that my clients are prioritizing themselves, and becoming more consistent and mindful about booking their sessions before the pain and discomfort builds to a boiling point. And with that advanced consideration, we shift into maintenance and stop flare ups before they even begin.

That being said, the first full week of May is booked. And several other days have been filled. There are still plenty of opportunities to get on the schedule, but I wouldn’t delay.

The last week of May will be a reduced schedule as I take Memorial Day off to spend with family.

You’re not failing because you’re still in pain.

You are managing. Learning. Trying. Growing. Surviving.

A little grace, patience and kindness towards yourself can go a long way towards healing.

Remember that the next time you’re being hard on yourself over things you cannot control.

Empathy is a superpower.

The energy of April starts building momentum.

The light, the weather, the wind…it’s all leading to a state of renewal.

This is the time my schedule starts filling faster. When clients come out of hibernation, begin stretching and moving their bodies more in the increasingly warmer and longer days. Shaking off the stiffness in their joints, and lengthening muscles that have felt cramped and immobile.

It’s also a time when little injuries can occur from moving too much too fast. When leaping before looking can result in setbacks. Our nervous systems need a more gradual period of adjustment. But our enthusiasm takes the lead. But that’s what I’m here for.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead and put your next massage on your calendar. Once again, Saturdays slots have all been filled. And you won’t find an evening appointment until the last week of April. I’ve indicated on my calendar how many spots are available on each day. Make sure one or two of them are reserved for you!

I have a pillow problem.

In reality, I have a pain problem, but pillows can be part of the solution, or a big part of why I feel worse.

This pillow party started a few years ago when I just got tired of the terrible neck pain upon waking. So I dove deep into the internet and started pillow shopping. Different shapes, sizes, textures, and densities. Some were a no-go right away. Some worked for a while, until they didn’t. Some I bounced back and forth between. Too big. Too small. Too hard. Too soft.

Just call me Goldilocks.

Trial and error is a common theme in self-care. Sometimes you know right away if something will be helpful or harmful. But most of the time you need to give it time, space, and consideration.

I’ve found that this is the case for massage as well.

My massage work is slow, steady and meticulous. Change and relief comes gradually. One session does not equate to a quick fix. Much like one night with a new pillow does not relieve all your neck pain. There is a process and some patience involved.

There is A LOT of wellness information out there. And not all of it is accurate. And none of it is a magic cure for the problem you have, even though many marketers try to convince you otherwise. There is no single solution for every person’s problem.

BUT…

We are the experts of our own condition. Meaning, we know how we feel in any given moment, and we have a general idea as to what helps and what doesn’t. And we develop that understanding of ourselves through trial and error.

So can there be a solution out there for our individual self-care concerns? Perhaps. But it’s not going to be a pillow. Or a single massage. It’s going to be a variety of factors, products, treatments, practitioners, lifestyle habits, etc, that we curate for ourselves over time.

I’ve had meds over the past several years that actually work for me. A schedule and lifestyle that keeps many of my symptoms at bay. I even found my own local massage therapist that I’ve been seeing regularly. And I *may* have found a pillow that reduces some of my morning neck pain. But I’m always searching and changing.

We all should be Goldilocks.

Confession…February might be my least favorite month.

Personally, professionally, seasonally…it’s just very challenging, emotional, and tiring for me. I tend to hold my breath throughout the entire 28 days, just waiting for it to run its course.

But March is the exhale.

It’s the remembering. The pushing up from the depths of Winter and the slow movement towards Spring. It’s the listening, and reflecting, and noticing what’s stirring inside you. It’s the creating of the conditions to come back to life and into alignment, after the cold, and the quiet, and the long rest.

Sometimes we need a little help to let go of our pent up breath and exhale. To move our bodies. To loosen the tension. To re-engage with ourselves.

All Saturday appointments in March have been booked. Most of the evening appointments have, too. There are still many opportunities to find yourself on my treatment table. Many opportunities to be guided through your exhale and begin truly moving your body again.

Reach out to book your next session.

When was the last time you exhaled?

Sounds like an odd question. But as a lifelong breath-holder, I am very aware of the collective breath-holding we all have been doing lately. And while it might be an automatic response to stress, fear, and worry, it’s really not doing your nervous system any favors.

I haven’t been on this platform very much over the past month. I was making a concerted effort to focus on simply being…and breathing.

The next time you find yourself clenching your jaw, gripping the floor with your toes, wearing your shoulders as earrings….acknowledge the tension, take a pause, and then let go of the breath you have been holding in.

Take in your next breath slowly, deliberately, filling your lower chest and abdomen like a balloon. Then let the air flow gently back out. And do it a couple more times.

Slow, specific, controlled breathing brings you back into your self, reconnects brain and body, and gives you a moment just to be.

We will continue to need many moments like this.

Keep breathing.

When are you going to really love yourself?

It’s the month of love. Love for partners, for friends, for family. Love for neighbors and community. Love for strangers across the country you will never meet.

Love is strong and powerful. It is also quiet and meaningful.

But how much love are you really setting aside for yourself?

How often to you stop and think about what you really need right now to thrive, during this chaotic time where just making it through the day is deemed a success?

I struggle with this very thing myself. But I’m working on it.

We can work on it together.

I’ve been pretty consistent about scheduling my monthly massage sessions. It is helping reduce my pain and tension. It is calming my heart and mind, even if only momentarily (every little bit helps). It gives me motivation to work on maintaining my self-care at home between sessions. It gives me time to focus ONLY on myself and my needs for a full 60 minutes, which is a big deal for those of us who spend our days taking care of others (I’m looking at you parents and teachers and nurses and all the other caregivers.)

If you haven’t been consistent about scheduling your own monthly massage sessions, this is a good month to start. Show yourself some love and care.

So reach out now and get on the books. All the February appointments on Saturdays, evenings, and President’s Day have already been spoken for. But there is still room for you.

See you soon.

Back in November, I hung some string in a corner of my treatment room, set out some cards and a pen, and mentioned to my massage patients that we could all use a little gratitude boost. They understood the assignment. By the end of the first week, I had to add another string.

Gratitude was expressed for family and friends. Comforting pets. Supportive co-workers. Good health. Access to healthcare. Happy homes. Plentiful food. Adventurous travel. The freedom to come and go, and live their lives safely and securely.

Acknowledgement of all these things is so very important. Even more so is the recognition that all human beings deserve the same.

My treatment room is a safe space for all. I receive my patients with kindness, empathy and respect. And send them on their way feeling that they are understood and cared for. I experience the same in return.

This is the very least we can do for our fellow humans.

I am keeping the garlands up a little longer. It serves as a reminder of all that we have, but also all the work that needs to be done to make sure everyone has it too.
