We were honored to attend the 8th Annual Consortium for Advanced Practice Providers’ Conference, “Navigating the Future: 20 Years of Sustaining Excellence in APP Postgraduate Training.”

Our APRN Faculty engaged with industry leaders, gained insights from expert speakers, and fostered valuable connections in the APP community.

Our APRN fellows had an exciting and educational Procedure Lab today with our amazing preceptor, Ann McCormick! 🩺✨

During today’s hands-on training, fellows gained valuable experience and learned the essential Erie process and basic standards for performing procedures safely and effectively.

By the end of the workshop, our fellows will be able to:
✔️ Safely perform liquid nitrogen treatments for lesions
✔️ Remove sutures and staples
✔️ Conduct skin biopsies — all with supervision

They also deepened their understanding of when to use steroid joint injections and practiced techniques for injecting the knee, greater trochanteric bursa, and carpal tunnel — all under guided supervision.

Great work to our fellows, and huge thanks to Ann McCormick for sharing your expertise! 💪🩻

🌟 Preceptor of the Week Spotlight 🌟
Meet our incredible preceptor — a dedicated Family Nurse Practitioner who has been a vital part of Erie for over a decade!

Working at Erie’s Teen Center and Lake View High School-Based Health Center, she’s passionate about adolescent care and committed to nurturing the next generation of advanced practice nurses. As a faculty member with the Advancing Practice program, she finds true joy in watching fellows grow into confident, compassionate APRNs and colleagues.

🩺 Why she became an APRN:
“I always knew I was going to be a nurse. I promised one of my professors at UPEI that I’d go back to school—and I kept that promise.”

💬 Teaching Philosophy:
Ask questions! There are no wrong questions—every one of them helps deepen learning and highlights where we can grow together.

🐾 5 Fun Facts About Her:

She has an adorable Bernedoodle puppy named Pepper Anne 🐶

She started her journey at Erie as a UIC FNP student, learning from the legendary Debbie Sontag

She grew up on Canada’s east coast, in the very province where Anne of Green Gables is set 🍁

Biking is her favorite way to get around the city 🚲

Her mom and brother are also nurses—and they’re all left-handed!

🏡 In Her Free Time:
You’ll find her cheering at her kids’ games, cooking up something delicious, or out walking with Pepper Anne.

We’re lucky to learn from such a thoughtful, experienced, and inspiring mentor. Thank you for all that you do! 💙

📢 Preceptor of the Week: Olivia Dixon, CNM 🌟

We are excited to spotlight Olivia Dixon, one of our incredible Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) preceptors for the AdvancingPractice Fellowship Program!

🌸 Get to know Olivia:
I've been a midwife since 2016. I've known I wanted to be a midwife since I was about 15, but it's been in my soul my entire life. I remember asking to go to my aunt's prenatal appointments when I was 4 or 5, listening to my other aunt's belly with a stethoscope during her pregnancy, and I always wanted to be the doctor who got to get the baby out of my friends belly far before that should have made sense. The mother of one of my HS friends was a midwife - I shadowed her one day in the office, and seeing how she connected with and cared for patients, I knew immediately that midwifery was my calling. Midwifery is my life, my joy, and my stress 🙂

4 fun facts: (I cant think of a 5th)
I learned Spanish living in Spain for a year when I was 17. When I started providing care to Spanish speakers in the US I had to lose my Spanish accent so patients wouldn't laugh at me for the lisp.
I love to knit! now that I'm precepting a few days per week, I've improved my skill and doubled my speed! tell me about your patient while I keep my hands busy.
I have a beagle named Indigo, he snuggles on his own terms, and takes up more than his share of the bed
For the last few years, I've made sure to have election day off to volunteer at the polls. It's physically and emotionally exhausting but so rewarding. You should consider volunteering!

My teaching philosophy is still developing since I'm newer to this position. I love learning with the fellows and being challenged - Question my ideas! Let's look it up together and defend our positions.
Hobbies: knitting, volleyball, cooking with friends.

Did you know that 4 out of 10 people with coverage are children? There is evidence that improved health among children with Medicaid leads to increased school performance as well.

Erie thanks Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL - 3rd District) for inviting us, and community health center peers, to last Tuesday's afternoon's Healthcare Roundtable to share our patient's stories.

AdvancingPractice Program Director, Kiersten Solis, was honored to take part in this conversation, advocating for the community. These cuts would be catastrophic for millions, threatening the very foundation of equitable healthcare. AdvancingPractice remains committed to training the next generation of healthcare leaders to serve our communities and advocate for healthcare as a human right.
