Dr. Craig J. Della Valle

Dr. Craig J. Della Valle Not only has Dr. Della Valle performed thousands of hip and knee procedures but he is considered a leading researcher in the field.

Dr. Della Valle is a native of New York and majored in Biological Basis of Behavior at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences in Philadelphia, PA. As an undergraduate he was named a Benjamin Franklin Scholar (designated to 10% of incoming students). As a work study student, he had his first real scientific experiences working in an immunology laboratory which spurred his interest in medicine and led to his first research award. While in college he spent a semester abroad studying in Florence, Italy. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with an honors degree from the Benjamin Franklin Scholar program. Dr. Della Valle stayed at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine for medical school and graduated again with honors, being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and receiving the Merk Manual Award for outstanding performance in his clinical rotations. During medical school he spent time at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. He returned to New York city for his internship and residency training at NYU Medical center and The Hospital for Joint Diseases. During his residency he dedicated a full year to basic science and clinical research, which laid the foundation for his further academic pursuits. His final leg of training was at Rush University Medical Center and Central DuPage Hospital, specializing in hip and knee reconstruction. He was asked to stay on as faculty following his fellowship training in 2002. Dr. Della Valle is now a full professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He is not only a busy surgeon (having performed more than 7,000 hip and knee replacements) but a respected leader in the field of hip and knee research. At present, he has co-authored nearly 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers, more than 60 book chapters and has edited 12 text books. He travels extensively sharing his research and these experiences allow him exposure to the most up to date information to maximize patient quality of care.

Mike, a 56-year-old avid cyclist and skier, struggled with worsening hip arthritis that eventually limited his ability to stay active and enjoy daily life. After researching different types of total hip replacements, he traveled from New Mexico to Chicago to undergo hip resurfacing with Dr. Craig Della Valle, a bone-preserving option for younger active patients. Just months after surgery, Mike is pain-free, back to cycling, and on track to return to skiing, calling the outcome life-changing.

Revision hip and knee replacements, once considered too complex and costly for outpatient care, are now entering ASCs for Medicare patients following a new CMS payment rule effective January 1. With improved protocols, surgeon experience, and careful patient and cost selection, early data suggest select “simple” revision procedures can be performed safely and sustainably outside the hospital.

Revision hip and knee replacements, long considered too complex, risky and expensive to move out of hospitals, are now entering a new frontier: ASCs for Medicare patients. A federal Medicare payment rule that took effect Jan. 1 expanded the procedures eligible for reimbursement in ASCs, pushing more...

New research from Rush shows that select revision joint replacements may have lower complication rates when performed in a free-standing ASC compared with a hospital. Patients in ASCs experienced fewer medical complications, infections, ER visits, and reoperations, especially for modular component exchanges and instability revisions. With the right patient selection, ASCs can be a safe and effective setting for simpler revision procedures.

Friday Featured Research!
Last month's Annual AAOS meeting reflected our ongoing commitment to impactful research by Adult Reconstruction at Rush.

Former Research Fellow, Freddy Yang, received the award for Best Paper in Adult Knee Reconstruction for our RCT on the effect of Duloxetine on TKA outcomes, which he started with us here.

This RCT was a collaborative effort, and one of our many projects dedicated to improving patient care.

Throwback Thursday to AAHKS’ Annual meeting in November, talking with YAG’s podcast, “The Augment.” It is an honor to provide mentorship, leadership, and research. I’ll continue to support our female leaders in orthopedics as I did during my presidency, work towards treatment of infected total joints and keep in mind, how far we’ve come in research. Click on the link in my bio to hear the full Podcast.
