please welcome Dr. Ele, our new audiologist based out of our Crown Point, IN location! 🎉

Hi, my name is Vignan Ele, and I’m excited to join the University of Chicago Medicine team at the Crown Point location as an Audiologist I. I recently graduated with my Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) from Missouri State University in May 2025.
I’m originally from India, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology in 2019. After graduating, I worked in a multidisciplinary clinical setting for a couple of years, which helped shape my approach to collaborative and patient-centered care.
I’m passionate about helping individuals improve their hearing and communication, and I’m looking forward to working with the amazing audiology, speech, and ENT teams here. I’m especially excited to contribute to the care of our patients and grow as a clinician within this dynamic environment.

Hello All! I’m Jess, St. Louis native turned Chicago resident (don’t worry, I’m a Cubs fan). Throughout graduate school I had the opportunity to work at vestibular focused clinics in Florida and Salt Lake City. Now, I’m ready to be part of the UChicago team!
Outside of work I frequent Pure Barre classes, enjoy walks/hikes, and catch up on my reading and audiobooks. I’m always on the lookout for a great new cafe or coffee shop. I’m looking forward to meeting you all!

Interesting Case from the Dizzy Clinic! 👂
We recently saw a patient who came to us with a suspected case of bilateral Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence (SSCD) based on brain MRI findings. However, while MRI can suggest SSCD, the gold standard for diagnosis is a high-resolution CT scan of the temporal bones.
During our vestibular workup, we performed both cervical VEMPs (cVEMP) and ocular VEMPs (oVEMP). Interestingly, results showed:
Left cVEMP showed an abnormally large amplitude and low threshold, while the right cVEMP was relatively small (< 50 uV).
Right oVEMP showed an abnormally large amplitude and low threshold, while the left oVEMP was smaller (43% asymmetry).
This “flip” in results highlights an important clinical takeaway: If we had only performed oVEMPs, we might have missed the left-sided abnormality.
While oVEMPs are often considered more sensitive for detecting SSCD, using both cVEMP and oVEMP provided a more complete picture in this case.
Always good to remember: when SSCD is on your differential, a comprehensive approach is key!
