Before I started receiving acupuncture -- and generally paying more attention to my health -- my mood was not particularly stable. And it always seemed to take a dive in September. I became irritable and lethargic. I had no motivation in the morning. I was just difficult to be around.
Luckily, my acupuncturist introduced me to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the idea that decreased levels of sunlight during the day lead to depression during the fall and winter. Typically, he said, the first dip in mood happens in September with a second dip occurring around February. That described my pattern perfectly!
We addressed the problem with a combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, vitamin D supplements, and light therapy, and I'm happy to say that SAD no longer rules half my calendar year. You can ask my husband if I'm more pleasant to be around during the winter. :)
If you're curious about light therapy, the light I used religiously for years (and still pull out on occasion when I need a pick-me-up) is the Feel Bright Light (https://feelbrightlight.com/). I got the version with a visor so I can wear it and stay active in the morning. Physical activity helps keep me sane when it's cold and gray outside.
Have you had to deal with SAD? If so, what keeps your mood afloat when the daylight changes in the fall/winter? I'd love to know.
