Is your child struggling with behavioral, emotional, or mental health challenges? Complex trauma could be the cause. If your child has been exposed to multiple traumatic experiences and shows signs like difficulty controlling emotions, changes in activity levels, or trouble forming relationships, it may be time to seek a professional clinical assessment. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) provides a checklist for parents and caregivers to help determine when additional support is needed for their child. This month, we will be diving into complex trauma as our content theme. To start, we’ll be sharing the definition of complex trauma. Stay tuned for more related content throughout the month!

We’d also like to share a helpful resource from NCTSN, which offers valuable information on complex trauma, its impact on youth, coping strategies (both helpful and harmful), and ways to improve. This guide is useful for youth who have experienced complex trauma or know someone who has. Clinicians, caregivers, and other adults can also use it to have conversations with youth about what complex trauma is.

Understanding dissociation in youth is crucial for clinicians working with trauma-exposed children. Dissociation is a psychological process that helps children manage and survive overwhelming stress or trauma by separating certain experiences, memories, or feelings from their conscious awareness. While this response can be protective in the moment, it has the potential to become problematic for the youth if it remains the primary coping mechanism. Dissociated memories can lead to fragmented thinking and behavior that can significantly impact a child's emotional and psychological development. By recognizing and addressing dissociation, clinicians can help integrate these fragmented experiences, promote healthier coping strategies and assist in creating a stronger sense of emotional well-being. For more information, visit the links in the post and follow along for additional dissociation resources!
