Self-care is partly giving ourselves space to be human. Waiting for a result from a medical or legal outcome, emotions can feel complex. Taking care of yourself anytime, and especially during hard times, is the most healthy gift to ourselves. If in the wait for life-changing transitions, try these five self-care ideas:
The “Scheduled Worry” Window: Give yourself 10 minutes (pick a time of day) to feel all the feelings that arise. No judgment, no hiding, no ignoring, no blaming. Feel the feelings. When the timer stops, intentionally pivot to a physical task.
A “No-Search” Pact: Commit to staying off forums and search engines for advice, stories, etc for some time. Excessive and obsessive information-seeking often fuels anxious feelings rather than soothes it.
Gentle Sensory Input: Focus on things that ground the body such as a weighted blanket, a warm cup of herbal tea, or a playlist of “low-fi” beats or any calming music.
The “Future You” Perspective: Remind yourself that no matter the results, you have a plan for how to take the next step. Focus on one step at a time.
Low-Stakes Distraction: Engage in an activity that requires just enough focus to block out loops of thought, like a complex coloring book, a reading book, a puzzle, a word game, crafting, flower-arranging, and so forth.
Sending love and hugs.
