It is with great pride that we announce that Dr. Asim V. Farooq has been promoted to Full Professor effective July 1st, 2025. Promotion to Full Professor signifies having amassed a record of exemplary teaching, influential scholarship, and effective service. Dr. Farooq has demonstrated excellence in all these domains. Dr. Farooq has published approximately 70 peer-reviewed articles, 20 abstracts, 10 book chapters, and is the co-editor of a textbook. He has spoken nationally and internationally on topics spanning from herpetic keratitis to ocular toxicity from targeted cancer drugs. Notably, he has assembled a national working group to study ocular toxicity comprised of ophthalmologists and oncologists from leading academic centers.

Dr. Farooq is an outstanding anterior segment ophthalmic surgeon, performing complex cataract surgery, ocular surface and anterior segment reconstruction, and corneal transplantation surgery. This accomplishment is not only an honor for Dr. Farooq, but for all of OVS. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Farooq for this monumental accomplishment.

Huge shoutout to our incredible team:

🥇 Dr. Rebecca Lusobya from Uganda won the Marilyn Miller Travel Grant and led an amazing workshop with Dr. Rodriguez.

📢 Sean Smith rocked the podium with his presentation on the cost-effectiveness of ROP prevention in Uganda.

📌 Rebecca Tanenbaum shared her research on the Health Survivor Effect and ROP—so excited to have her as a future colleague in pediatric ophthalmology!

🏆 Jason Zhang’s poster won Best of Show!!!!

Our annual Rabb Retina Study Club event, Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at the Gleacher Center from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. All attendees are encouraged to share their more challenging cases with their peers and to have open discussions of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Vitreo-Retinal disease. Case order is first come/first to present! Please see the attached agenda for all event information. We look forward to seeing everyone!

Welcome to The University of Chicago's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. Our department's shared purpose is to transform lives, today and tomorrow, through our guiding principles of respect and compassion, teamwork, integrity, and innovation. We are pleased to announce the opening of our newly-renovated clinical space located in the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine on the UChicago campus in Hyde Park. We have 24 fully-functioning examination rooms, a state-of-the-art imaging suite, dedicated retinal injection rooms, and a teaching conference center for our residents, fellows, and rotating medical students. We aspire for our reputation to continue to grow through not only providing specialized eye care to patients across the Midwest, but also our passion to advance the field of ophthalmology through collaborative research.
