Are muscle and joint changes related to hormones? Absolutely! As research evolves, we now know that strength training is essential during perimenopause and postmenopause—not something to scale back. Contrary to common belief, strategic weight training can actually reduce muscle, joint, and tendon pain during these years. With so much conflicting advice out there, it’s easy to feel lost. Stay with us as we navigate these changes and find the best approach for lifelong strength and mobility!

At Chicago Physical Therapists, we are keenly aware of what the research says about hormones and joint pain. Fluctuations and declines in estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone—whether during perimenopause, postpartum, breastfeeding, or due to medications like aromatase inhibitors used in oncology—can drive inflammation and significantly impact musculoskeletal health. These changes often lead to increased hip and shoulder pain, tendinitis, and joint stiffness, as well as GSM (genitourinary syndrome of menopause) symptoms.

Understanding these hormonal influences allows us to take a more comprehensive approach to care. Rather than just treating one joint, we consider the bigger picture—how hormones, muscle loss, and inflammation interact—so we can help you move and feel better. This is a complex and important topic, and we’ll be sharing more insights soon. Stay tuned!

We love incorporating innovative and helpful tools like the Mobo Board into our physical therapy treatments. During a recent staff Mentoring Meeting, Laura Gleason shared insights about the Mobo Board and demonstrated exercises to target specific muscles, flexibility and mobility.

The Mobo helps improve joint mobility, balance, and overall movement control, making it a game-changer for anyone recovering from injury or working to prevent future pain. It’s a fun and effective way to support your recovery and movement goals!

💓 February is Heart Month! 💓 When you feel strong, are able to stay active, and able to move without pain, you’re not just benefiting your body – you’re supporting your heart health, too!

Whether it’s walking, hiking, dancing, or simply playing with your kids, staying active in the ways that bring you joy makes a real difference for your heart. ❤️

We also want to share that we take your heart health seriously — we have an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in the clinic. Today during our mentoring meeting, we practiced using the AED (no one was shocked today though!). Your safety and well-being are always our top priority!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that physical therapy can be a part of breast cancer recovery?

The Benefits of Physical Therapy for Breast Cancer Recovery: 💖

1️⃣ Pain Relief: Many patients experience pain after surgery, and physical therapists are skilled at using techniques like manual therapy to provide relief and promote healing.

2️⃣ Improved Mobility: Restoring movement is crucial, as tightness and limited mobility are common post-surgery. Targeted exercises can help regain range of motion and flexibility.

3️⃣ Strength Building: Rebuilding strength is also essential for regaining confidence, and therapists create personalized plans to help you gradually get stronger without overexerting yourself.

4️⃣ Lymphedema Prevention: A specially certified physical therapist can perform techniques to help reduce fluid retention,  support the immune support and provide relief from neuropathy.

5️⃣ Managing Effects of Treatment: Physical therapy can assist with managing symptoms of menopause. Long-term hormonal therapy is often prescribed for those who have hormone receptor positive breast cancer. This treatment is meant to block the body’s production of hormones or prevent them from attaching to cancer cells and causes the body to go into a medically-induced menopause. Physical Therapy intervention can help to manage potential symptoms of menopause including: joint pain, loss of strength and bone density and pelvic floor symptoms including incontinence and pain with in*******se.

6️⃣ Emotional Support: Physical therapy isn’t only about the physical aspects of care - it is also about supporting you emotionally and helping you meet goals, and feel empowered and connected on your journey.
