UPDATE: All spaces filled in less than 1 hour of registration 🙏🏼✨😃 WOW!!!! Message me to pre-register for the March Nature Walk, happening on Sunday 3/12 🗓️👈🏼✅

As promised, another FaeWise Nature Walk!!! 🌿

WHEN : Sat. Feb. 11th
TIME : 12 pm - 2 pm
WHERE : Butte Creek Ecological Reserve, HoneyRun Unit

The weather has been absolutely DREAMY lately, and our region is bursting forth in lush exuberance from our prolonged rain. This is a wonderful time to learn and celebrate the resilient and revolutionary flora and fungi we share space with.

Please join me Saturday, February 11th, from 12 pm - 2 pm! We will be exploring the stunningly beautiful and pristine floral habitat along the Butte Creek Canyon Ecological Reserve, HoneyRun Unit 🍯🌿

This trail is nice and FLAT, with no incline. Given that I am 5 months pregnant, accessibility is important to me for this adventure 🙂 This hike will be exciting, but not overly strenuous.

On this Nature Walk, we will be
🌿 Acquainting ourselves with our local native and non-native flora
🌿 Learning to identify medicinal and therapeutic herbs in the wild
🌿 Discussing principles for ethical wild harvesting, and our role as restorative allies in relationship with our plant and fungi neighbors.
🌿Visiting in conversation the legacies of mining, eco- and socio- colonization, wildfire, and climate change upon our very unique bio region. A necessary topic when learning about becoming an ally to the land!

To register for this Nature Walk —
DM me at .wise and I will add you to our roster 🙂

Cost is $25 per person for a 2 hour highly informative class. (Children are welcome at no charge, or on sliding scale donation basis if you have the economic means.)

However, if cost is a barrier to you attending, please reach out to inquire about our scholarship options ✨ This is the people’s information!

See you there!

Believe it or not, we are set to receive a break in the rain next week! Just in time for a glorious, sunny outdoor excursion that I know we have all been craving 🌞

Please join me next Saturday, January 21st, from 12 pm - 2 pm! We will be exploring the stunningly beautiful and pristine floral habitat along the Butte Creek Canyon Flume Trail. 💦

🍄… and of course, we will be geeking out over the plethora of incredible mushrooms and fungal species that have popped up after this wonderful rain!!!!

Mushrooms incubate and hide underground in periods of drought. Because this is the first real, nourishing rainy season our area has had in many many years…. this is hands down THE MOST INCREDIBLE MUSHROOM SEASON I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!

As such, my enthusiasm on this hike will be impossible to contain 🥰

Y’all know by this time how I feel about Usnea ✨🥹✨

A symbiotic union betwixt fungus and alga.
A vestige and canary of atmospheric purity.
A inspirator of mythic archetypes and curmudgeon-y legends.

A soother. A balancer. A healer.

I read recently an interesting thought about how we describe Usnea’s therapeutic actions: “anti-“inflammatory ; “anti-“microbial.

So much emphasis placed on the disease + imbalance in these descriptors! I use these terms so often when discussing herbal actions. They are accessible terms, easily understood— but what is lost when we use negatively oriented descriptors like these?

What is gained by highlighting what these herbs *promote* + what they *balance*?

Usnea lichen for instance, does have bactericidal actions. Bacteria can reasonably be classified in two groupings: gram positive and gram negative. While both of these groupings own bacterial culprits who may harm health… it must be accepted that there are a vast array of beneficial bacterial strains that deserve our gratitude and protection.

Enough of that “Kills 99.999% of Germs” slogan, as if that’s in any way remotely a good thing.

What we need is earth-given bacterial balancers. Usnea displays bactericidal actions against specific strains of gram positive bacteria that are prone to causing kidney, bladder, and urinary infections.

Here’s the cool part : Usnea is really good at leaving alone our beneficial bacteria! It has a remarkable ability to distinguish which bacteria are helping us, and which strains are acting harmfully, or out-of-balance.

Could this have something to do with its own nature as a symbiotic entity? I sure as heck think so ✨

————————————

A couple other considerations:
🔸Usnea is slow growing, and sensitive to environmental pollutants! Be sure to only harvest from clean, abundant areas, with gratitude and what offerings you may have to give in return.
🔸This lichen is difficult to process, requiring strong alcohol and heat during the extraction process! Advanced methods required.
🔸I’ve read contradictory lichen viewpoints about whether it’s the fungus that encases the alga, or the alga that encases the fungus. Anyone want to weigh in?

Fun with Mullein! 🌼

Latin binomial: Verbascum thapsus

I’ve spend many dreamy hours interacting with mullein leaves as medicine… but WOW it is so fun to switch it up and get to know the flowers!

I began scheming up an ear oil, with a friend in mind who has been dealing with some ear issues… and in my research I discovered that Mullein flowers are more commonly used in ear oil preparations than the leaves! Some recipes do call for the cooling, demulcent leaves… but all call for a decent handful of the flowers!

I will be adding fresh garlic to the infusion as well, to create an ear ache remedy that is cooling, soothing, antimicrobial, and healing. A must-have in any medicine cabinet!

🌼

Harvesting mullein flowers, which bloom in high summer, must… I repeat MUST… be done in the morning before the heat of the day sets in! The flowers bloom for one day and one day only, unfurling in the wee AM hours and shriveling in the heat!

The flower stalk will progressively grow taller and taller, sending out new flowers each morning, that will always wither in the heat and be replaced by new flowers in the morning.

The Mullein in our yard sent out a particularly beautiful display of flowers this morning, so we decided it was absolutely necessary to get a little harvest in before we bundled down the hill to school.

Have you made an ear ache oil before? What herbal allies do you use in yours?

🟣 Common Chicory 🟣

Latin binomial : Cichorium intybus

When I was a wee sprite, we had chicory in abundance, gracing the meadow in front of my home with her knee-high periwinkle stardust. My mother called them “the morning flowers”, and true to this name I remember their tender blooms unfurling in the glory of the cool, pink-and-purple sunrise. They would wink at me as we bundled off to school, the golden sun not yet reaching us from over the mountain. Later, they would hide shyly from the heat of the day 🌞

Chicory has a rich history of use medicinally… but rarely (if at all) do I hear of folks using the above-ground blooms and shoots for medicine. More often, the Chicory root is harvested for preparation and ingestion.

Chicory root, when roasted, yields a wonderful toasty flavor that has earned it repute as a coffee substitute. Low in acid, and conversely rich in prebiotic compounds, most notably Inulin, a decoction of the root yields a rich, warm infusion that is beloved by persons with gut sensitivities, intolerance to caffeine, or an overly acidic stomach.

Prebiotics are not to be confused with Probiotics— which are actual beneficial bacterial organisms found in fermented foods and in supplements. PRE-biotics, like the inulin found in chicory are *food* for the fore-mentioned beneficial bacteria. They are called prebiotics, because they pave the path for probiotic colonies to take residence in the gut, nourishing them and providing a foundation for their colony.

In fact, Chicory is so rich in Inulin, it is grown on an industrial scale to provide supplement companies with enough Inulin to standardize and encapsulate.

If coffee gives you the jitters or an acidic stomach… a chicory-based coffee substitute might be a fun new recipe to try!

As mentioned in the video, DO NOT harvest on roadsides, as root systems are very prone to holding onto roadway toxins. I did not harvest from the roadway patch that I filmed in… merely pulled over to spend some time in conference with these beautiful Starshine friends.

Big ups to my dear who bought me a bumper sticker that says “I brake for wildflowers” 🌼🌸🌻😂 It’s so true!!!
