Hey Down Rangers,
We’ve had quite a few customers and members reach out with questions about recent reports surrounding the SIG SAUER P320 pistol. Rather than speculate or weigh in with opinions, we want to share accurate information directly from SIG SAUER, which was sent to us and other ranges and dealers across the country.
Down Range Indoor Training Center is not taking a personal stance either way as we have not conducted our own research and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on testing it out for ourselves — our priority is your safety and keeping you informed.
So this is straight from SIG SAUER:
“The P320 pistol is one of the safest, most advanced pistols in the world – meeting and exceeding all industry safety standards. Its design has been thoroughly tested and validated by the U.S. Military and law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. It remains in active duty use worldwide, including with the U.S. Military.”
Here are the key points SIG wants you to know:
FBI Testing: A report circulated following an accidental discharge involving a Michigan State Police officer. Follow-up testing — done with FBI and SIG engineers — showed zero failures, and the Michigan State Police continues to issue P320 pistols with confidence.
DHS/ICE Memo: While an internal memo was leaked online, SIG clarifies that ICE renewed its contract for the P320, and no official safety concerns were raised by the Department of Homeland Security.
U.S. Air Force Investigation: A tragic incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base is currently under review. The M18 (P320-based) remains in service across all military branches.
Range & Training Bans: Some ranges and instructors have banned the P320 based on incomplete or incorrect information. SIG encourages anyone affected to reach out directly to their Customer Service at 603-610-3000 (Option 1).
SIG’s Bottom Line:
“The P320 CANNOT discharge without the trigger first being pulled. This has been verified through rigorous testing by SIG SAUER engineers, the U.S. Military, and independent labs.”
At Down Range, whether you’re training on the range or shopping in our gun store, we take firearm safety seriously. Regardless of the brand or model, safe handling, proper training, and following the fundamentals matter most.
If you own a P320 or are considering one and have concerns, we encourage you to review SIG’s official statements and reach out to them directly for technical guidance.
Thanks for staying informed and safe out there.
