Can Irlen Syndrome Affect Co-ordination? 🤔
Absolutely it can, especially in children. Adults brains generally learnt to adjust so it is not as obvious.
There can be a difficulty catching or kicking a ball, riding a bike, walking on a balance beam or walking in a straight line and any sport involving a bat/racquet and ball such as cricket or tennis. 🏓
Some people seem clumsy, tripping over their own feet, bumping into objects or tipping over drinks.
This is because for some people, where their brain perceives objects in the environment (especially moving ones) is not exactly correct. So for some the object may seem closer or further than it actually is and so the ball might drop at their feet or even hit them in the head. 🤯
Wearing Irlen lenses normalises their spatial awareness and depth perception so they are more able to participate in sport and stop bumping into things. 🌈

My Child is Refusing to go to School... Could it be from Irlen Syndrome?

Our clinic sees a lot of children who are constantly trying to avoid going to school as much as possible simply due to the fact that the classroom is too bright making it difficult for them to do their school work.
They might go to school but they take a long time to get ready, or get out of the car because it is just too hard and uncomfortable for them at school. So everyday is a battle for mum or dad trying to get them to school.
These children may spend a considerable amount of time in the sick bay as well, complaining of headaches or nausea. Sometimes they really do feel unwell but sometimes it is to avoid doing the difficult tasks such as reading or writing stories or even a spelling test or quiz.
Some of these children experience daily headaches, get extremely tired at school and just can't see the words clearly enough to do their reading and writing. They start to feel that school is just a waste of time because no matter how hard they try, they just can't seem to improve.

So if you have a child who is refusing school, reluctant to attend or spending lots of time in the sick bay, it may be worth an assessment for Irlen Syndrome. It is a simple, inexpensive one hour appointment but it just might be the most significant hour in your child's school life.

I survived a hemorrhagic stroke when my kids were little. I was left vision impaired. I could walk & talk, that's not so bad, right? But, unfortunately, I was unaware of the many debilitating side effects that would follow. Light sensitivity, headaches, wavy vision & even seizures ended up a part of daily life. That changed with my first pair of Irlen glasses! I have had many pair through the years and am thankful EVERY day for the freedom and life that they bring me. Words are not enough

If Irlen has nothing to do with eyesight, then why do people wear glasses?

Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing difficulty, where the brain is unable to efficiently and accurately process the visual information seen by the eyes. Glasses with coloured lenses in them is the only way to protect the brain from the wavelengths of light (colours) that it is unable to process correctly.
There is no other way light gets to our brain except through our eyes.

The lens colour is chosen through a 2 hour comprehensive assessment based around visually intensive tasks including reading, and is specific to each individual.
