Helping People Find Their “Why” Through Self-Efficacy
By: Christine Craig, MS, RD, CDCES

As a diabetes education specialist, one of the most powerful tools I’ve found in supporting lasting lifestyle change is helping individuals uncover their personal “why”, the deeper reason they want to improve or maintain their health.

Whether its avoiding complications experienced by their family members, staying active to travel the world, or simply feeling better day-to-day, connecting behavior change to meaningful personal values gives purpose to the daily decisions that diabetes management demands. This internal purpose often drives more sustainable outcomes than external pressures or goals set by others.

🧠 Dementia Risk: What You Can Control 🧠
New Insights: 45% of Dementia Cases May Be Preventable
The 2024 Lancet Commission update identifies 14 modifiable risk factors — and tackling them can significantly reduce your risk of developing dementia.

Risk Factors are modifiable at all stages. Here is what you can do TODAY:
📚 Early Life
— Stay in school and support education for all kids

🧑‍⚕️ Midlife (45-65 years)
— Manage blood pressure and cholesterol
— Protect your hearing (use ear protection + treat hearing loss!)
— Prevent and manage diabetes and obesity
— Reduce excessive alcohol intake
— Protect against head injuries (wear those helmets!)

👵 Later Life (65+)
— Stay active (body + mind)
— Quit smoking 🚭
— Treat depression
— Stay socially connected
— Get regular eye exams and correct vision problems
— Limit exposure to air pollution

🌎 Small changes = big difference. Protect brain health across the lifespan.

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌱
Let’s celebrate the planet by choosing foods that nourish both our bodies and the Earth.

🥦 Eat more plants – Plant-based meals use fewer resources and reduce your carbon footprint.
🍎 Choose seasonal & local – Support your local farmers and reduce transportation emissions.
♻️ Reduce food waste – Plan meals, store food properly, and compost scraps.
🌾 Sustainable swaps – Try whole grains, legumes, and nuts instead of processed options.

Eating for a healthier planet can also support a healthier YOU. Every bite matters. 💚

🌿 March is National Nutrition Month! 🌿

Did you know that food insecurity—lack of consistent access to nutritious food—can lead to higher rates of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure?

When people don’t have enough food or rely on low-nutrient, processed options, they are more likely to experience these chronic conditions.

Access to nutritious food is a key part of disease prevention! Support nutrition programs and food banks which provide vital resources for individuals in need.

Nutrition For Daily Living will be donating to the following organizations in honor of National Nutrition Month and will continue to advocate in support of nutrition programs serving those in need.
