Old-School Showdown: Rye Cove, Chilhowie Ready for Smashmouth Football Friday
The pads will be popping tonight in Chilhowie as the 5-2 Rye Cove War Eagles travel to face the 6-1 Chilhowie Warriors in a Region 1D matchup loaded with playoff implications and old-school grit.
This will mark just the third meeting ever between the two programs — all coming within the last three seasons. Rye Cove has taken both of the previous contests, including last year’s instant classic, a 40-39 thriller decided in the final seconds.
Both teams mirror each other in style, relying on physical defenses and bruising, run-heavy offenses. It’s the kind of game that makes football purists grin, three yards and a cloud of dust from the opening whistle.
Rye Cove has leaned on a tough defensive unit that’s posted two shutouts this season. Offensively, the War Eagles will look to the trio of Will Rollins, Carter Roach-Hodge, and Cole Barnette to carry the load and test a Chilhowie front that’s been one of the stingiest in Southwest Virginia.
For Chilhowie, it’s been much the same recipe for success. The Warriors have recorded three shutouts of their own, and only one opponent — Eastside — has managed to score more than seven points on them all year. That lone blemish came in a 28-14 loss, their only defeat of the season.
On offense, Gunner Milhorne and Asher Chapman have been the engines that make the Warriors go, both capable of breaking big runs and wearing down opposing defenses with physical play.
With Chilhowie sitting at #2 and Rye Cove at #3 in the Region 1D standings, tonight’s outcome could shake up the playoff picture. Both teams are built for November football — physical, disciplined, and unafraid of a slugfest.
When the dust settles tonight in Chilhowie, one thing’s for sure: whoever wins will have earned it the hard way.
