I initially got into this field of myofunctional therapy to try to help my daughter with Down Syndrome, because I knew if I can successfully breastfeed her, I was setting her up for success for speech, a chance to eat a more varied textured diet, an opportunity for less upper respiratory diseases, less protrusion of her tongue, less risk for ear infections. With a diagnosis, we are given a large list of providers for early intervention. Why isn’t myofunctional therapy and orthodontics on that list!?!!! It has become my mission to educate my fellow DS mommas and empower them to do more for our kids. I’ve met some amazing like minded therapists spreading awareness to our community as well. Meet and 💙💛💙These ladies are doing amazing things for our community 🙌🏽🙏🏼😘
Did you know a common procedure done in our Community is a tongue reduction? 🙊Yes, you read that correctly. Parts of the tongue are surgically removed because it does not fit inside the narrow jaws and causes a major airway obstruction. Early intervention ortho needs to be spoken about more to parents of children with Down Syndrome.
I am so happy that an out of state friend and DS momma reached out to me to ask about orthodontics for her child.
