Softly Returning to Myself 🤍

Meditation has been my anchor lately — helping me slow down, reconnect, and meet myself with more love and gentleness. In the quiet, I’ve been finding peace, clarity, and a deeper sense of connection with who I am and the work I do.

For the past couple of months, prioritizing meditation, morning stretches, and prayer has helped ease my anxiety, deepen my self-awareness, and allowed me to show up in the world with more love and intention.

Importance of Hydration in Pregnancy:

Staying hydrated is essential, especially during pregnancy, to support the body’s physiological changes.

Benefits for Baby: Water helps transport nutrients to the baby and flushes out toxins.

Preventing UTIs: Drinking plenty of water helps dilute urine, which reduces the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by flushing out harmful bacteria.

Dehydration Risks: Dehydration can lead to serious complications, including hypertension, preterm labor, and other cardiovascular problems.

Amniotic Fluid: Water helps replenish amniotic fluid, which is critical for the baby’s protection. About a cup of water is needed per hour for fluid replenishment.

Increased Blood Volume: The body’s blood volume doubles by 26-28wks requiring more water to avoid complications like thick blood and hypertension.

Preventing Preterm Labor: Dehydration is a primary cause of premature labor, but sufficient hydration can help prevent or stop it.

Daily Hydration Goal: Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily or half your body weight in ounces (in addition to other fluids and food recommendations).

Benefits of Drinking Water:

💧 Reduced sodium levels
💧Lower risk of preterm labor and miscarriage
💧Better bowel movements
💧Help with morning sickness

Tips to Drink More Water:

💧 Carry a water bottle everywhere.
💧Set a timer or use a reminder to drink.
💧Drink a glass of water with protein snacks every 3 hours.
💧Fill a gallon jug or several containers with your daily water goal and track your intake.

Remember, water is your best friend during this special time. Enjoy this simple yet effective recipe for extra hydration, and give your body the nourishment it deserves. Cheers to a healthy, hydrated pregnancy!

Unfortunately, out-of-hospital births are not the norm, which often leads to misconceptions about how midwives keep moms and babies safe.

In reality, we have a range of tools, equipment, and medications to manage complications when needed.

One simple yet powerful tool we use is the APGAR score. ✨

Did you know the APGAR score was created by a woman? While many medical tools are credited to famous men, the APGAR score, which helps assess a newborn’s health immediately after birth, was developed by Dr. Virginia Apgar, a female physician.

As midwives, we don’t always need to intervene right away. We can visually assess a baby’s well-being—looking at their color, breathing, and movements. Most of the time, we don’t need to perform routine procedures unless we see signs that the baby needs extra support. The APGAR score helps us quickly evaluate if any additional care is necessary. 💖

So, next time you hear about the APGAR score, remember it was a woman who made this crucial contribution to ensuring newborns have the best start in life. 💫

Finding Joy in the Simple Moments: A Midwife’s Reminder to Be Grateful

As a midwife, my days are filled with profound moments – the births of beautiful new lives, witnessing the strength of mothers’, and the deep connections made in the midst of chaos. It’s easy to become consumed by the weight of responsibility and the demands of the job. But I’ve learned that it’s just as important to stop and appreciate the small, simple joys in life.

Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea before the day begins, a laugh shared with a colleague, or spending some time outdoors , these small pauses help me recharge and remind me of the beauty in the everyday.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that I am human too. I love being a midwife, but it’s a constant balancing act.

Caring for others while caring for myself is a reminder that self-compassion is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. I may wear many hats throughout my day, but I am still someone who needs to step back, reflect, and be grateful for the simple things that keep me grounded.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment today. Breathe in the quiet, savor a small pleasure, and remember that you are allowed to be human. Even in the busiest of days, there’s always something to be grateful for. Life’s little joys are often the best remedy.
