At yesterday's press conference in recognition of National Blood Donor Month, Blood Bank of Delmarva was joined by Dover City Council Members, Kent County, Sussex County and Delaware healthcare and EMS leaders, to address the ongoing need for blood donations.

“The blood donations we collect support patients at every stage of life, from newborns to trauma victims to cancer patients. Without warning, any one of us could need a blood transfusion,” said BBD Vice President Kristin Frederick.

January is historically one of the most challenging months for the blood supply, as holiday travel, winter weather, and seasonal illness often disrupt donations while patient needs remain constant. National Blood Donor Month serves as a reminder of the lifesaving impact of routine blood donation.

For more than 20 years, the Munnich family has gathered around the holidays to donate blood and give a gift that truly matters. What started as a family tradition has become a powerful example of giving back during a time when donations are historically low.

This year, they made it even more special by welcoming their foreign exchange student from Norway to join them, sharing this lifesaving tradition across borders and cultures. Thank you to the Munnich family for showing that the spirit of the holidays is about generosity, community, and saving lives!

Historically, most blood donors in the U.S. are over the age of 40, with the average age of platelet donors rising into the late 50s to early 60s. Because of this, donations from Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly vital.

Fallon first donated during the holiday season in December 2002, when she was a 17-year-old high school student. Inspired by her mother, who also began donating at age 17, Fallon has remained committed to supporting patients throughout her adult life.

She transitioned to platelets 15 years ago at the Christiana Donor Center after learning how critical platelets are for pediatric cancer patients.

“I just feel that donating gives children an hour or two to sit up and be with their loved ones, or be able to play their Super Nintendo or X-box and not feel sick."

Cecil County is taking a lifesaving step forward.

Members of the Cecil County Government and Cecil County Department of Emergency Services recently rolled up their sleeves to donate whole blood ahead of the official launch of prehospital blood.

Prehospital blood allows paramedics to rapidly transfuse low-titer, O-positive whole blood to critically ill or injured patients before they ever reach the hospital. When seconds matter most, having blood immediately available can mean the difference between life and death.

This program represents incredible collaboration, forward-thinking leadership, and a shared commitment to saving lives in our community. We’re proud to support Cecil County EMS as they bring this advanced level of care to the field, and grateful to the paramedics and county leaders who led by example by donating themselves.
