Staff highlight of the week - our midwife Andrea Lorenz

Andrea joined us early this year. She has been a midwife for 2 ½ years now, graduating from Frontier Nursing University. She has strong love for community birth and feels right at home at the birth center. The seed to midwifery was planted over 23 years ago, when she was a young mother and her first born came earthside into the hands of an inspirational midwife. She has taken the scenic route to become the CNM she is today while providing for her family. She has 11 years experience as a nurse in a variety of specialties including end-of-life care in hospice, and 7 of those years in Labor and Delivery.

Andrea believes in the wisdom, power, and intuition of the birthing mind and body and allowing that body the time and space it needs to bring life earthside and is dedicated to providing compassionate care that honors the natural process of pregnancy and birth. She desires to be as hands-on as you need, or as hands-off as you need during your birth to create a safe, nurturing environment. Andrea believes that pregnancy and birth are sacred, life-changing experiences and is deeply honored to walk along side families during this emotional and spiritual journey. It is a privilege to serve families at the birth center and to witness the strength, vulnerability, and beauty that emerges with every birth.

Andrea has 3 children of her own, mostly grown now, along with a dog and 2 cats. She has a strong love and connection to being in nature and honoring the earth, leading to many camping and hiking trips which she shares this love with her kids. Other hobbies include riding her motorcycle in nice weather, reading and audiobooks, tending to her spiritual side, and spending time with friends and family.

Commemorating Michel Odent the “Father of water birth” who just passed a few days ago. Giants like Odent pushed back against medicalization of birth and protected the sacredness of birth. We love our waterbirths here at Birth Care

We are so sorry to hear this news from Michel Odent's family.

"It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr Michel Odent announce his death at the age of 95. Dr Odent was born July 7, 1930, in Bresles, France. He died peacefully in London, England, on August 19, 2025 following a brief illness.

Dr Odent trained as a general surgeon in Paris, and advocated for the demedicalisation of birth whilst in charge of Pithiviers Hospital. In later life, he founded the Primal Health Research Centre in London, and published extensively on topics related to childbirth and early breastfeeding.

He is survived by many loved ones, including his partner Liliana, and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to La Leche League. Dr Odent will be cremated in a private family service with a public memorial to follow in several weeks."
