“Good friends! You already possess the prajna wisdom of enlightenment! But because your minds are deluded, you can’t understand by yourselves. You need to find a truly good friend to show you the way to see your nature. Good friends, buddha nature isn’t different for the ignorant and the wise. It’s just that people are deluded or awake. When people are deluded, they’re ignorant. When they wake up, they become wise. www.ogzen.org

Some Zen Teachings Enjoy it
"When he arrived at the East Mountain Monastery and asked for the master's instruction, he was simply put to work with the field laborers winnowing rice (as he was from a poor class, not a monk, and perhaps an ethnic minority). Several months later, he heard that Master Hongren had invited all the monks of the monastery to try composing a verse that would show their understanding of the Way of Awakening. Hearing that the head monk had written a verse on a temple wall, the young wood-seller, being illiterate, asked a friendly monk to read him what the head monk had written. The head monk's verse read:

The body is the Bodhi Tree,
the mind is the stand for a bright mirror -
at all times diligently polish
to remain untainted by dust.

Huineng then asked the monk to help him write his own verse on the wall:

Bodhi has no tree,
nor is there a stand for the mirror.
Our true nature is forever pure,
so where can dust gather?

When Master Hongren read the first verse, he praised the head monk's sentiments as useful advice for practice. When he read the young man's verse he pointed out to those present that, “This is still not complete understanding.” Later that night, however, he met privately with the young Huineng, expressed approval for his insight, and gave him further teaching. He then instructed the young man to leave the monastery to avoid contention, and practice in seclusion. Thus Huineng went to live with hunters and woodsmen in the forest, as well as workers and merchants in towns, and remained in obscurity for sixteen years.

Open Gate Zen Collective

Open Gate (OG) Zen Collective (4 Vows Sangha) emerged from multiple sitting groups gathered in San Diego. This included friends of Sensei Shinzan and the Carlsbad Zen Community. Thanks to the direction and generosity of Mark Koe Gunn, weekly sittings became available in his Carlsbad home in 2015. Later, Sensei Jose Shinzan Palma was invited to impart dharma teachings there. CZC later moved to Encinitas and became known as the sangha’s North County Group with its other half established in the South bay. Sweetwater Zen Center opens its space for the meditation group. Thus, 4 Vows Sangha (Now OG Zen Collective) came to be with the leadership and vision of Sensei Shinzan. OG Zen Collective is a group of people that share and are motivated by the practice of Zen (Zazen) and work together to achieve harmony in our lives for sake of world.

OUR MISSION is to gather and practice zazen (Zen meditation) and develop Zen training. We practice to realize and embody what our Zen ancestors have done for centuries, to realize our Buddha nature, to awaken and to serve others.

OUR VISION is to keep the practice of Zen, to wake up and to embody the 4 All-Embracing Vows:

Beings are numberless; I vow to Awaken them.
