GOOD NEWS❗️Update.

The team here at our office wants you to know we are thinking of you. We hope to re-open in early May - we will let you know as soon as we have an open date. In the meantime, we want to share some of the things we have been working on here at our office to prepare for a safe re-opening:

We are installing medical-grade air purifiers to help keep you, and our team, safe.

We will be limiting the number of people we provide care to at one time to ensure appropriate physical distancing.

We will be asking patients to wait in their vehicles and we will text you when your room and provider are ready for you.

We will also be taking your temperature with an infrared no-hands thermometer to help ensure a safe environment for everyone.

You may also notice different masks and uniforms. We want to assure you we have the best sterilization protocols in place and are closely following CDC recommendations.

We have also added Teledentistry as a service to our patients. This service may involve taking pictures of your teeth, gum tissue, or area of concern so we may assess the best course of treatment. Contact us to share a narrative of your symptoms and we will be more than happy to have a conference call with you to address any dental related issues you may have.

We will continue weekly announcements to update you on any changes in our office protocol as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop. And as always we will seek guidance from the CDC and health experts.

Through these challenges, we have gained an even greater appreciation for you, our patients, and we are committed to keeping you safe while you are in our hands. We wish all of you good health and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

If you have any questions or a dental emergency, please call our office and we can set up a teleconference with you. We are here for you.

Sincerely,

Mark A. Barraza DDS and staff

Backpack? Check. Booster shots? Check. Teeth cleaning? Check!

Regular dental visits are important year-round, but a back-to-school checkup is key in fighting the most common chronic disease found in school-age children: cavities. In fact, dental disease causes children to miss more than 51 million school hours each year.

Prevention and early detection can help avoid pain, trouble eating, difficulty speaking and school absences. “When people are beginning to do their pediatrician checks to make sure their kids are school-ready, make sure teeth are part of it!"

A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. "I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want Novacaine because I'm in a big hurry," the woman said. "Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way." The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?" The woman turned to her husband and said, "Show him your tooth, dear."

20th Annual Lemon Festival Presented by Wal Mart Returns to
Third Avenue Village Sunday August 7

CHULA VISTA – When life hands you lemons, bring them to the Lemon Festival, presented by Wal Mart! Third Avenue Village Association’s Lemon Festival celebrates 20 years in Chula Vista’s original neighborhood on Sunday, August 7. Rejoice in this juicy jubilee with the community by sporting your brightest yellow outfit and enjoying lemon-infused activities including live bands, sour contests, a kid’s fun zone, a craft beer garden and hundreds of festive booths.

Crates of Chula Vista summer fun will fill Third Avenue from 10 am to 5 pm at no cost to the community. Celebrating Chula Vista’s historic reign as the lemon capital of the world, Third Avenue closes to traffic and opens to hundreds of vendor booths and over 30,000 eager attendees.

Live bands rocking the event on the Lemonade Bandstand at Park Way and the Citrus Stage at E Street will feature The Routine, Grizzly Business, The Johnny Deadly Trio, Orbitrons and more. Between the tangy tunes, compete for glory and prizes in the Lemon Pie Eating, Lemon Peeling and Largest Lemon contests. Sour style will be rewarded as well, with the Best Lemon Outfit contest. All attendees are encouraged to wear yellow to showcase their Chula Vista pride.

Reach new heights at the new Festival Fun Zone located at F Street where attractions will include water wheels, a bungee ride, rock wall and more to delight thrill seekers of all ages. Brimming with interactive features and giveaways from community partners, this 20-year tradition is more refreshing than the fresh-squeezed lemonade offered in abundance.

For adults seeking something stronger than lemonade, head to Memorial Park from 10:30 to 4:30 pm for the Lemon Festival Craft Beer Garden featuring a signature Meyer Lemon Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing Co. Additionally, Thr3e Punk Ales, Groundswell Brewing Co., NOVO Brazil and Bay Bridge Brewing will be pouring their signature brews. Mike’s Hard Lemonade joins the party offering their signature sour beverage.

The 20th annual Lemon Festival is made possible by Title Sponsor, Wal Mart with additional contributions from Scripps Health, Cox Communications and Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

Even though they are temporary, your child's baby teeth are important, and are still susceptible to cavities. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers is often referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, or Early Childhood Caries. Children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and have a good-looking smile. Their first teeth also help make sure their adult teeth come in correctly. It’s important to start infants off with good oral care to help protect their teeth for decades to come.

What Causes Baby Bottle Tooth Decay?

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay most often occurs in the upper front teeth, but other teeth may also be affected.

There are many factors which can cause tooth decay. One common cause is the frequent, prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to drinks that contain sugar. Tooth decay can occur when the baby is put to bed with a bottle, or when a bottle is used as a pacifier for a fussy baby.

Tooth decay is a disease that can begin with cavity-causing bacteria being passed from the mother (or primary caregiver) to the infant. These bacteria are passed through the saliva. When the mother puts the baby’s feeding spoon in her mouth, or cleans a pacifier in her mouth, the bacteria can be passed to the baby.

If your infant or toddler does not receive an adequate amount of fluoride, they may also have an increased risk for tooth decay. The good news is that decay is preventable.

Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Try not to share saliva with the baby through common use of feeding spoons or licking pacifiers. After each feeding, wipe your child’s gums with a clean, damp gauze pad or washcloth.
When your child’s teeth come in, brush them gently with a child-size toothbrush and a smear (or grain of rice sized amount) of fluoride toothpaste until the age of 3.
Brush the teeth with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste from the ages of 3 to 6.
Supervise brushing until your child can be counted on to spit and not swallow toothpaste—usually not before he or she is 6 or 7.
Place only formula, milk or breastmilk in bottles. Avoid filling the bottle with liquids such as sugar water, juice or soft drinks.
Infants should finish their bedtime and naptime bottles before going to bed.
If your child uses a pacifier, provide one that is clean—don’t dip it in sugar or honey.
Encourage your child to drink from a cup by his/her first birthday.
Encourage healthy eating habits.
When your child’s first tooth appears, talk to your dentist about scheduling the first dental visit. Treat the first dental visit as you would a well-baby checkup with the child’s physician. Remember: starting early is the key to a lifetime of good dental health. For more information about nutrition and your baby, visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
