Spanish Flu
In 1917-1918 there was a deadly flu epidemic throughout the world. It was called the Spanish Flu and was spread by soldiers heading home at the conclusion of W.W.I. It has been estimated that 20 million people died worldwide including 500,000 Americans. This 1918 viral flu has been described as capable of sickening and killing a person on the same day.(1) The public noticed that the morbidity and mortality rates for Chiropractic patients was considerably less than those of the general public. Chiropractors became know as "Flu Doctors" and it was through this improved standing in the public realm that were able to gain licensure in the birth place of Chiropractic (the state of Iowa). Walter Rhodes reported that in Davenport, IA (the city where the first chiropractic adjustment was performed by D.D. Palmer) there were 4953 influenza patients seen by Medical Doctors with 274 deaths. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport adjusted 1635 patients with the Spanish Flu and had only 1 death. In the state of Iowa Medical Doctors treated 93,590 patients with 6116 deaths (1 in 15). In the same state (excluding Davenport) there were 4735 Chiropractic flu patients with only 6 passing away (1 out of 789).(2) Similar statistics were found elsewhere in the United States.(3)

“While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, Chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment ” Dr. B. J. Palmer

“Medicine is the study of disease and what causes man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes man to live.” Dr. B. J. Palmer

Dear Patients Of Cicero Chiropractic ,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones are doing well. As you are aware Governor Pitzker issued a stay at home order and a close down of all non-essential business.
The Chiropractic profession is considered an essential business and as such we will remain open at this time. In fact, more than ever it is important that you keep up with your adjustments. History has proven this statement.
I urge you to read about the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1917-1918 (Google Chiropractic and Flu 1918 ) . We learned a great deal from this epidemic and we are now practicing good common sense principle of public health including social distancing and proper hygiene. One of the interesting elements that was learned from the Epidemic of 1917-1918 was the positive impact Chiropractic care had on the recovery of those that contracted the flu as well as helping others maintain their health .
Each of us need to research about what we hear, check the facts and make the best decisions for ourselves and loved ones based on facts and not FEAR .
This office will continue to provide care to our patients . However, we will not disregard the fact that we need to practice our best public health practices. This is how we will move forward:
1. Space our patients visits to allow for proper social distancing.
2. Request that patients refrain from using the reception room if one other patient is already present.
3. We will be requesting that you refrain from our previous "drop in" policy
and call us to let us know you are planning on coming in .
4. We will continue to practice our cleaning protocol that we have always had in place.
In listening to the Governor and other authorities today I did not hear anyone state positive things you can do other than social distancing, washing your hands and staying inside your home. So, here are a few tips that are important to understand:
1. Ultraviolet radiation is a natural killer of viruses and the best source is sun light. Get outside, even if it's cold but dress appropriately for conditions.
2. Fresh air. If you are outside you are less likely to come in contact with a virus.
3. It's a great idea that before you go out for your sunlight that you change the filter in your furnace (if you have not already done so) and open a few windows and let your house breathe. *Turn down your thermostat before you leave. Once back at home close the windows and let the house heat up slowly.
4. Avoid your sugar intake...sugar to a virus is like gasoline to a fire.
5. Stay hydrated.
6. Stay positive. Watch funny movies or meditate.
7. Stay productive. Clean out a closet (ugh).

We are on your side and will always do our best to be here for you. If you decide that you would rather not leave your house we will honor your decision. We will not fear you into coming in for an adjustment...that's just not our way of doing things.
Yours For Better Health ,
Dr. Mitchell J. Weiss, D.C. and Staff
