Cincinnati Children's Pain Management Center Learn more about our acute and chronic pain services, including our Medical Pain Service and our inp What Is Pain Management?

If your child is hurting, our Pain Management Center can help. We use a variety of approaches to relieve your child’s pain. We work to manage the pain children may experience in the acute setting (after an injury or during an illness) and in the chronic setting (e.g., recurrent abdominal pain, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, back pain). The most effective approach to pain in children is a multidis

ciplinary one: several practitioners work together to best meet your child’s needs. Patients in our outpatient clinic see a physician, a psychologist, a physical therapist and a pain nurse. Each healthcare worker has special training and experience in caring for children in pain and helping the children’s families. The Functional Independence Restoration Program is also part of the Pain Management Center. which is one of the country’s only comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation programs for children whose severe, chronic pain is preventing them from enjoying a good quality of life. The functional independence restoration approach helps patients learn more about their condition, develop coping skills, recondition their bodies and transition back into their lives. On September 15, 1999 the CCHMC Pain Clinic opened its doors. Over the subsequent 25 years, our Center has grown to be one of the preeminent programs in the world. Our research programs are world-class, and we have published over 350 scientific journal articles, 2 books and lectured at scientific meetings and hospitals all over the planet. Our former trainees takes care of kids and young adults with pain all over the United States. But it has always come down to taking care of each patient and their family, one-at-a-time, in the best way we know how. We thank all of our patients and their families for the privilege of taking care of them and for trusting us to help in their journeys into the best lives they can possibly have. We. Are. 25!

Yes, indeed! It is that time of year. September is Pain Awareness Month. This is a special year, with some cool celebrations to come (that's a teaser - stay tuned!). But most of all, it is a time to spread the word about pain and the need for better understanding it and better treating it.

Today was a special day, but not for medical reasons. The solar eclipse featured the path of totality passing very near to Cincinnati. Our Dr. Goldschneider journeyed to Fernald Preserve and wanted to share some of what he photographed with everyone, since this was a rare event. He gives a little information with each photo. Enjoy!

Here is Dr. Marina Lopez-Sola, giving the most energetic lecture we had ever seen (and on a very complicated topic)! Dr. Lopez-Sola did her post-doctoral fellowship here in Cincinnati, and is now working in Barcelona, Spain. She is a friend, collaborator and a wonderful example of how our pain group is starting to reach worldwide to figure out the whys and hows of pain.

Chris King, PhD does what is called "Translational Research" which tries to take the knowledge and theory we learn from basic science and see how it applies to people, so we can better understand what goes on (both good and bad) and can design better treatments. His poster at the ISPP in Halifax had to do with how to make treatments for chronic pain such as the FIRST Program more effective.
