Parental burnout is hallmarked by emotional and physical exhaustion, these symptoms can also manifest as feelings of depression and/or anxiety. Experiencing burnout as a parent is nothing to be ashamed of, and in fact means you were juggling too much for too long and your body needed to send a signal that it was time for a break.

Prioritizing rest and re-connection to ourselves during a period of burnout may sound impossible while navigating parenthood, but that's what our village is here for. Lean on your support people, utilize your community, be vocal about your needs and don't feel guilty when accepting help from others.

“One key to successful relationships is learning to say no without guilt so that you can say yes without resentment.”

When it's time to say no, put your foot down, or decline an invitation remember to focus on the outcome more than the action itself. Yes, standing firm in your needs is hard but so is being overwhelmed, burned out, or in an unwanted situation.

The result of maintaining these boundaries is a cleaner schedule, peace of mind, or more time for pleasurable activities. The finish line is within reach, and you will get better at reaching it every time you try.

Have you ever heard of box breathing? 📦😮‍💨 It has lots of benefits & is pretty easy to do without instruction! Benefits can include things like ⬇️ Lowered blood pressure & stress ⬆️ Increased memory ⬆️ Better sleep ⬆️ Boosted emotional regulation ⬇️ Controlled breath and reduced hyperventilation & MORE! (Believe it or not) In order to take advantage of this completely free and easy grounding technique you’ll start by inhaling for a count of four, holding the breath for a count of four, exhaling for a count of four, and then holding the breath again for a count of four. With each breath and hold you’ll imagine drawing a stable and smooth line, until you’ve drawn a box! What you do with it is up to you. Sometimes it’s helpful to picture putting your worries and current stressors in it and sending it away, others find comfort imagining crawling inside and resting. Learn anything helpful? Black birthing people and mothers face a very unique and specific set of obstacles when it comes to the perinatal period. Dismissed symptoms, systemic racism, and lack of education regarding presentation of issues lead to unresolved complications and even maternal mortality.

July 19th-25th is observed as Black Maternal Mental Health Week to raise awareness for these occurrences, and distribute resources for Black birthing people and mothers to utilize when support is needed.

This year the theme for the week is: "Building an Accountable Village: Providing Sustainability and Generational Impact Through Inspiration, Nourishment, and Mindful Awareness".

Where a flower may be lacking sunlight, a parent may be lacking support.
When flowers droop in hopes of receiving more water, a parent drops their head in hopes of community.
As living things we all have similar needs, and many parents may just be needing additional help or resources the same way some flowers need extra shade or fertilizer.

In media people who remain optimistic, kind, or thoughtful after a negative experience are portrayed as naive or weak. This thought couldn’t be farther from the truth — in fact people who refuse to let the cruelty of the world change them are some of the most inspiring!

There is nothing weak or naive about remaining soft in a hardened world.

There is strength in sensitivity, and resilience in empathy.
