New research from our Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics sheds light on how loneliness affects autistic youth. In a survey of 241 autistic individuals 15–26 years old, researchers found that negative social experiences—like feeling ignored or excluded—contribute more to loneliness than simply spending time alone.
This means that autistic youth often prefer quality social interactions where they feel included and respected, rather than frequent ones.
Understanding this can help families, peers, and communities create more supportive environments where autistic youth feel truly connected. 💙
