Our latest spotlight is none other than Nicci Weber! Nicci is our Vice President of Human Resources & Workforce Initiatives and wears several hats at The Health Collaborative. We caught up with her to learn more.

What are you currently working on at The Health Collaborative that excites you?
I’m especially excited to dive into my Education Liaison responsibilities, helping educators better prepare students for healthcare careers after high school. This work brings me back to my days as an educator (a long time ago!) and allows me to blend that experience with my HR development background - the perfect mix for me.

Is there anything you’re reading that you connect to work?
Most of my reading is an escape from everyday life, but I recently binge-watched the first season of The Pitt. The mass-casualty scenes really highlighted the incredibly valuable work of our EPR (Emergency Preparedness & Response) team. Several years ago, we led a community-wide exercise at Great American Ballpark, where I played a victim transported to Good Sam Hospital. I’m continually impressed by the real-word impact of our work.

Any hobbies?
At this stage of life, my favorite moments are the times I get to spend with both of my children. While that happens less often now, weekends like this past one when the four of us were together are especially meaningful. It’s been wonderful watching my young adult children build a new relationship outside our home, and when we’re all together, there’s always a lot of laughter.

Do you have a favorite part of your job?
The Health Collaborative has been very good to me over my nearly 16 years here. What I’ve loved most are the people I’ve worked with, past and present, who share a deep commitment to our work and to improving health and healthcare in Cincinnati. It’s rewarding to see the behind-the-scenes impact our work has had over the years.

Finally, if you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
Ideally, I’d love to take a train trip through the Canadian Rockies and up into Alaska - the natural beauty and wildlife would be unmatched. That said, watching the Winter Olympics this year has also sparked my interest in visiting Italy.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight the Community Health Team of Mercy Health - Cincinnati, and its commitment to addressing housing insecurity as a critical driver of health. Through the Mercy Health Partnership Program and the Perinatal Outreach Program, dedicated Community Health Workers walk alongside primary care patients and pregnant community members, providing personalized, hands-on support to address social needs that directly affect health and well-being.

In close partnership with Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME), families facing housing instability receive tenant advocacy and emergency financial assistance designed to prevent homelessness. This proactive, dignity-centered approach delivers measurable impact. In 2025, every pregnant client who received housing emergency assistance through this collaboration was stably housed at the time of delivery, and remained stably housed three months postpartum!

Funded by Mercy Health - Cincinnati, and supported by Cradle Cincinnati and the Ohio Department of Medicaid, this cross-sector collaboration illustrates what’s possible when health care and community partners invest together. By addressing root causes, not just symptoms, Mercy Health continues to lead with its mission to strengthen communities, advance equity, and build healthier futures for families across the region.

In 2025, we launched employer-led, occupation-specific workgroups to address workforce gaps of the most in-demand healthcare professions across our region. These workgroups focus on Nursing, Medical Assisting, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology. Beyond strengthening talent pipelines, the workgroups are dedicated to identifying and removing barriers to accessing and completing healthcare credentials, as well as securing and advancing employment opportunities.

Today, we are proud to recognize the Surgical Technologist Workgroup for the incredible progress they have made in just one year! We extend a tremendous thanks to the outstanding chairs whose leadership has guided this work:

Julie Moody, DNP, M.Ed, RN, NPD-BC; Cincinnati Children’s
Amy Yarbrough, BS, BSN, RN, CNOR; The Christ Hospital

Thank you both for everything you do for our healthcare community.

Throughout the year, we bring together leaders from across the region to help prepare our communities for seasonal and emerging health concerns - such as cold and flu season, RSV, vaccine awareness, and potential outbreak scenarios. This collaborative group, the Infectious Disease Action Group, shares data and insights and aligns on clear, consistent messaging. By working together behind the scenes, we streamline efforts and ensure our healthcare systems are aligned on the most pressing health concerns facing our region.

We are proud to have any part of the impactful work led by the Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition (HC ARC) in our region. This coalition of experts is dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome challenges related to addiction. Their recently released Annual Report highlights remarkable progress: since the crisis peaked in 2017, Hamilton County has experienced a 66% decrease in overdose deaths! Even more encouraging, the data shows a consistent 30% year-over-year decline, with overdose deaths decreasing from 277 in 2024 to 194 in 2025.

The report, which reflects 2025 data, also spotlights the opening of the Talbert House Hamilton County Crisis Center—a 47,000-square-foot facility designed to serve as a centralized hub for addiction and mental health crisis intervention, stabilization, and treatment. This new center represents a major step forward, creating a more streamlined, coordinated, and responsive system of care for our community.

Alongside the work of the Hamilton County Public Health Department, The Health Collaborative is also featured in the report. It specifically highlights our specialized trainings for the region’s Chief Nursing Officers, which focused on reducing stigma, increasing understanding of the role of syringe exchange services, and sharing best practices for emergency department response to addiction-related crises.

Thank you to our own VP of Clinical Strategies, Tiffany Mattingly, who serves on the Steering Committee and as co-chair of the HC ARC Community Health Committee, alongside THC board member and Hamilton County Public Health Commissioner, Greg Kesterman. We also extend our thanks to Josh Arnold, a new THC board member, for his leadership at Talbert House. We are grateful for their service and for the dedication of all HC ARC members.

Diane Egbers, founder of LEI, led an energizing session on managing leadership change, helping nurses shift from managing tasks and timelines, and inspiring people to create meaningful, lasting impact. Attendees swapped real‑life change stories and teamed up to ideate how to tackle current challenges. Huge thanks to Diane for her continued support and guidance this year.

Last week, members of our Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) team, along with Dr. David Hartley from Cincinnati Children’s, met with delegates visiting Cincinnati through the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP). IVLP is a professional exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State that connects global leaders with organizations across the United States to share perspectives and expertise.

We were honored to contribute to their visit by sharing how regional partners collaborate through real-time data sharing and coordination! Our team highlighted systems developed during COVID-19, including the Situational Awareness Learning Tool (SALT), as well as key lessons learned from the pandemic response and the importance of sustaining these capabilities to strengthen public health monitoring, performance measurement, and overall emergency preparedness.

Following the presentation, delegates engaged in a thoughtful Q&A and shared perspectives from their own countries. We appreciate the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas that help strengthen health systems both locally and globally.
