Things your pediatricians at Springdale-Mason Pediatrics wish you knew… 💛

When we think about safety, we often focus on the physical — and that’s important. But emotional safety is just as important.

Children who feel heard and believed are more likely to speak up when something is wrong. They’re more likely to ask for help, navigate challenges, and build healthy relationships.

Emotional safety doesn’t require perfect parenting. It looks like:
• Listening without immediately correcting
• Taking feelings seriously
• Repairing after hard moments
• Creating a home where questions are welcome

Connection is preventive medicine.
And your presence matters more than you realize. 💛

We know screens are part of everyday life. This isn’t about guilt or doing things perfectly.

It’s about protecting growing brains, sleep, and emotional health in a world that moves very quickly.

Setting limits can feel hard — especially when kids push back. But loving boundaries are one of the ways we keep them safe.

Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach virus that goes through daycares, schools and communities every year at around this time. Symptoms usually start 1-2 days after being exposed. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headaches and body aches and can last 1-3 days.

The virus is spread through coughs, sneezes, touching contaminated surfaces and sharing food and drinks with someone who has the virus.

This virus is hard to kill!
👉 Norovirus can live on surfaces such as door k***s, sinks and counter tops for up to 2 weeks! Use an approved disinfecting wipe or a bleach solution (4 teaspoons of bleach in 24 oz of water) and wipe down frequently touched surfaces like door k***s, faucet handles, remotes, and countertops. Mix a fresh batch of bleach solution every 7 days.
👉 This virus does not get killed by hand sanitizers so it is very important to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Have kids sing the Happy Birthday song to make sure they wash long enough! 🎶
👉 Do not share food or drinks! No matter how tempting, it is just not worth it!

There is no medicine to cure norovirus so treating the symptoms is important.
🚰 Give small amounts of clear fluids every 20-30 minutes if your child is vomiting. Pedialyte or other rehydrating drinks can help to combat dehydration. Popsicles and ice chips also help. Clear soup broth is a good rehydration fluid.
💊 Treat fevers with tylenol or ibuprofen if needed.
💚 Probiotics can help lessen the diarrhea.
🛌 Let them rest, they can be very worn out from this illness.

Call the office if your child...
❗️cannot stop vomiting and is not able to keep even clear fluids down.
❗️has severe abdominal pain or bloody diarrhea.
❗️is urinating a lot less than is normal or has very dark urine.
❗️is excessively fussy or so tired that you cannot wake them up easily.
❗️has other symtoms that are severe or that worry you.

⚠️ Flu Alert: What Parents Need to Know

We’re seeing a LOT of flu cases in the office right now. Here’s what you should know:

Signs of the flu in kids:
• Fever, chills, body aches and fatigue
• Cough, sore throat, runny nose
• Recently, we have seen a lot of kids coming in complaining of belly pain, vomiting and diarrhea

What to do at home:
• Keep your child hydrated
• Offer acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever or discomfort/pain. Please do not give aspirin or regular Pepto-Bismol (which has aspirin in it), it is not safe for children when they have the flu.
• Rest is very important—avoid school/daycare until fever-free for 24 hours and other symptoms are improving

When we really think you should call us:
• Trouble breathing or wheezing
• Fever lasting more than 4 days
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no urine for 8+ hours, or vomiting and unable to keep fluids down)
• Very young children or kids with chronic health conditions
• You child appears to be in a lot of pain despite trying pain medication
• You are worried - that is what we are here for!
• You are wanting to discuss antivirals like Tamiflu, which can help in some people if started within 48 hours of symptoms

We are hoping that the flu will start going away soon! 🤞 We hope your family stays well, but please call us if you need us.

Up next: Fevers can be scary — but in most cases, the fever itself isn’t dangerous. It’s a normal sign that your child’s immune system is doing its job. Read on to see when to worry, and when it's ok to watch at home.

We don't always get a chance to tell you at well visits, but this one, we really want to make sure you know: Boys may feel shy or embarrassed about talking about pain “down there,” but sudden or severe testicular pain can be an emergency. Don't wait to call us or to get it checked out. Please make sure your child knows when to speak up!

We're continuing our series of things we wish we could say to each and every parent!

Today we want you to know: Picky eating is completely normal. Many children go through phases where they suddenly refuse foods they used to like — and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. We hope this helps guide you if you're seeing this in your own child!

Things your pediatricians at Springdale-Mason Pediatrics wish you knew… 💛

Today we want you to know: Development isn’t a race. Milestones aren’t deadlines. Needing extra support doesn’t mean you did something wrong.

Over this series, we’ll share the insights we wish every parent had — the guidance, reassurance, and perspective that doesn’t always fit into every well visit.

❄️ Brr! It is absolutely freezing outside. We absolutely want your kids warm while in the car, BUT those big, warm, bulky coats can mess with how well your car seats work!
Here’s how to keep your child both warm AND secure:

✅ Skip the big coat in the seat – Instead, dress your child in thin, warm layers.
✅ Use a car seat-friendly blanket – Place it over the harness after your child is buckled.
✅ Consider a wearable blanket – These go over the straps safely.
✅ Warm up the car first if you can – Even a few minutes of pre-heating can make a big difference.
✅ Use Hats and mittens – Keep their heads and hands covered for extra warmth.

Please share with your friends and tell us in the comments which one of these you will start using!
