Long post ahead
Even though I’ve worked in women’s health all of my nursing career, I’ve never considered myself a huge proponent of or a type midwife. Until now. I attended a conference hosted by Grow Midwives in Kansas City this past week. And we are failing women, all women. Hugely.
The president of AWHONN shared a quote and it really hit home with me.
“Women are not dying because of untreatable diseases. They are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving: We have not yet valued women’s lives and health highly enough.” -Mahmoud Fathalla, past president of the Itnl Fed of Ob and Gyn.
It’s devastating to know that we, one of the richest countries in the world have an abominable maternal mortality and morbidity rate. These families are left with lifelong suffering with the loss or near deaths of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
The WHO has asserted that the midwifery model of care can solve this and has been proven in other countries.
We have been fighting this for decades. Let’s make this the last one.
No one is coming to save us. We are the people we have been waiting for.
Love to all my friends that are fighting the fight. ❤️
