St. Martin de Porres, Religious

St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru. Being of mixed race, (a Spanish nobleman and a freed Black woman), he faced social disadvantages, but his father made sure he was apprenticed as a barber-surgeon, a trade that included medical knowledge.

He joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother and dedicated his life to serving the poor, the sick, and animals. He founded an orphanage and a children's hospital and was known for his extensive charity.

He was admired for his humility, piety, and spiritual gifts, which included levitation and bilocation. Numerous miracles were attributed to him, both during his life and after his death, leading to his widespread veneration.

He is known as the patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and a wide range of groups, including barbers, hairdressers, and people of mixed race. His life serves as an inspiration for inclusivity and compassion towards marginalized individuals.

He died on November 3, 1639, and was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962.

The commemoration of all the faithful departed, known as All Souls' Day, is a day to pray for those who have died, particularly those believed to be in Purgatory, and to express continued love and remembrance. This day is a time to remember that death is not the final separation and to focus on the hope of resurrection and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.".

Respect Life

“…[L]et the light of that glory shine so brightly that everyone may come to recognize the inestimable value of all human life. Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” Pope Francis
