Dr. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander was a pediatrician and microbiologist whose work helped develop antibiotic treatments for Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, once a leading cause of death in children.

Her research greatly improved survival rates and helped guide the development of pharmaceutical treatments for infectious diseases.

Altev Community Pharmacy celebrates Women’s History Month recognizing the accomplishments of Mary Munson Runge for being among the first African American women to graduate from Howard University’s College of Pharmacy.

Mary Munson Runge made history as one of the first African American women to graduate from Howard University’s College of Pharmacy in the early 1900s.

At a time when opportunities for both women and African Americans were limited, she broke barriers and helped pave the way for future generations of Black women pharmacists.

Her determination opened doors for many who followed in the profession.

Today, women pharmacists continue to expand healthcare access in communities across the country.
