Our Story
The Community Engagement Core (CEC) translates UC's Center for Environmental Genetics (CEG) science and research into understandable and useful information, tools, and resources for community members, public health decision-makers, and health care professionals. The CEC is primarily funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) funded Community Engagement Core (CEC) strives to translate Environmental Health Science (EHS) from the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Environmental Health, Center of Environmental Genetics into practical health promotion, disease prevention information, tools and resources for community members, public health decision-makers, and health care professionals. The UC CEC has been at the forefront of Environmental Health Science (EHS), forming academic-community partnerships to address issues related to several exposures, including air pollution, lead contamination, exposure to manganese, chemicals from the world’s largest hazardous waste incinerator, and hydraulic fracturing. We also provide outreach to physicians and health care professionals through workshops, seminars, and creation of online educational modules. As the CEC increases community members’ awareness of EHS and the specific issues that face particular communities, members can then become more actively involved in advocating for the health of themselves, their families, and their communities.
