Sound Bites Nutrition, LLC Entertaining, no-nonsense nutrition tips, quips, and recipes provided by Registered Dietitian Lisa Andrews. I've been a lover of food and health all my life.

After working as a clinical dietitian in a hospital since 1990, I opened Sound Bite Nutrition in 2008 to focus my professional life on wellness versus illness.I work with both individuals and groups to provide engaging, personalized nutrition education and counseling. I have experience in small and large companies providing nutrition lectures, cooking demos, health coaching and wellness programs.

I enjoy doing grocery store tours as well as media events.I am not a perfectionist and don't believe in ridiculously stringent or fad diets. Clearly, if you have celiac disease, you can't have gluten! 💙Happy Blue Monday!

🫐 July is but you can enjoy this blue-tiful treat any thyme.

👩🏻‍🍳I whipped this appetizer up for for a segment airing tomorrow on the health benefits of blueberries.

🥯 Using cranberry sea salt crackers from as the base, I topped them with a schmere of whipped cream cheese and a delicious blueberry chutney made with

Ingredients::
1 cup frozen blueberries, mashed
1 tsp honey
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp chopped fresh mint leaves
1/4 tsp diced red onion

🥣Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Spoon 1/2 tsp chutney over cream cheesed crackers. Enjoy!

👏 This new trend is

🌽 Fiber helps with:
🍽️ Appetite control
💉 Blood sugar management
❤️ Prevention of heart disease
💩 Laxation- what comes in must come out!

🧑🏻‍🏫Be sure to:
🥤Drink plenty of water
🫛Add fiber gradually
🗒️ Monitor symptoms of gas, abdominal pain, constipation

🦸🏻‍♀️Some of my favorites include:
🥣 Rolled oats (old fashioned cook in microwave in 2 minutes)
🫘 Beans- add to soup, salads or as a side
🫐 Berries of all kinds - in season now
🥬 Leafy greens and a variety of vegetables

Easy swaps:
🍛Chews brown rice over white
🍝Try whole wheat or chickpea pasta
🥪Use whole grain bread
🍎 Eat the skins of fruit, veggies and potatoes

🤷🏻‍♀️ What's safe to eat and what should you avoid?

💻 Today I had the pleasure of presenting to employees in person (and via zoom) about the topic.

Key takeaways:
✅ Food additives are regulated by the FDA for safety.
✅ Ultra-processed foods contain the most
✅ Avoid artificially colored food and drinks when you can, but don't panic. These foods shouldn't be consumed too often anyway.
✅ Limit sweetened and artificially-sweetened drinks. Cane sugar adds weight just like high fructose corn syrup!
✅ Use common sense. Balance, moderation, and variety are key to good health.
✅ Don't forget to get enough sleep, don't smoke, exercise regularly, drink alcohol in moderation (if at all), and manage stress!

🥩 Have you been told that you need 1 gram of protein per pound body weight?

🥗 Lettuce do the math on that.

⚖️ Say you weigh 150 pounds. 150 grams of protein would mean you'd need to eat:
• 7 (3 oz) chicken breasts OR
• 20 eggs OR
• 15 (8 oz) cups of milk
PER DAY.

😳Does that sound reasonable to you?

🤷🏻‍♀️While protein and strength training are important to build muscle, eating too much won't build more muscle and may crowd out other nutrients your muscles need like carbs and fat.

💪 In reality, you can eat 1/2 your weight in protein and still build muscle. 75 grams per day sounds a lot more normal. Dontchathink?

🍳🍗🍔AND- it doesn't all have to come from animal sources!

🫛🫘🥜Peas, beans, and other plant proteins can also build muscle mass.

🏋️‍♀️ Finally- stop killing yourself at the gym. Your muscles need thyme to rest and recover. Strength training can be done for as little as 20 minutes 2-3 days/week.

👩🏻‍💻 I recently wrote an article on lectins, and it opened my eyes to how much misinformation there is on the topic.

🤷🏻‍♀️No wonder people are confused on what to eat.

🫘Bottom line- don't eat raw beans!

🍍🫐🍉No matter what fruit you have on hand, you'll love this tasty salad.

🍯🍋‍🟩🌿The key is a delicious dressing of honey, lime juice, and mint.

👉🏼In a large bowl, combine:
• 1 chopped apple of choice
• 1 cup cherries or blueberries
• 1 cup green or red grapes
• 1 cup halved strawberries
• 1 navel orange, sectioned and cut into 1" pieces

🥣Creat a dressing with:
• Juice of 1 lime
• 1 tsp honey
• 1 tsp chopped mint

👩🏻‍🍳Add the dressing to the fruit and toss to combine.
