It was fun experiencing the Flying Pig Marathon from the perspective of the medical tent this year.

Crunches aren’t the best way to train your core.

Your core’s main job isn’t to create movement — it’s to resist movement and stabilize your spine.

That’s why exercises like planks and the Pallof press are more effective.

They train your body to:
✔ Resist extension (planks)
✔ Resist rotation (Pallof press)
✔ Maintain control under load

This is what actually carries over to lifting, running, and sports performance.

Crunches mainly train spinal flexion — which doesn’t do much for stability and, in some cases, can even aggravate symptoms.

If your goal is to build a stronger, more resilient core, focus on exercises that train control — not just movement.

If, for some reason, turning off light switches isn’t very exciting to you, hopefully the background tour of the training room livens things up.

What’s not included in this video is the usual hustle and bustle of treatment and rehab, and the other athletic trainers that keep these teams and athletes competing at a high level.

I was truly blessed the last few months to be able to work at my office in the mornings, followed by afternoons with highly competitive volleyball players and student athletes in general, and the coaches & strength coaches. Not even to mention the other AT’s who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all things sports medicine.
