The Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award 2024: There were 13 nominees for this year's Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award which recognizes individuals with exceptional Compassion, Communication and Collaboration. The award went to Michelle Michels. The following was noted in the award presentation:
This year’s honoree is known for her unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of her patients, their caregivers, and her colleagues. This commitment has helped transform the lives of patients who are experiencing some of the most difficult life-changing events. She brings unparalleled energy to her work, driving her relentless pursuit of creative solutions and collaborative efforts to enhance the care we deliver.
She exemplifies compassion in every interaction and possesses a remarkable ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Her exceptional ability to understand each patient's personality and motivations allows her to build deep connections. She isn't hesitant to bring humor and joy into interactions, using silliness to foster trust and comfort among her patients.
Recently a school-aged girl on our unit expressed her love for horror movies, especially the "jump scare" moments. During the parade celebrating the end of her rehabilitation stay, Michelle didn't just join in singing and waving pom poms like everyone else. Instead, she surprised the girl by jumping out from behind the nurses' station, perfectly timing a scare that left a lasting, joyful memory on her last day on the rehabilitation unit.
Michelle, your compassionate care, and the joy you bring to the lives of your patients and your colleagues makes you truly deserving of the Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award.
Congratulations, Michelle, well deserved!
