We are also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for comprehensive integrated inpatient rehabilitation and pediatric specialty care program. Our program is one of only three accredited pediatric rehabilitation programs in Ohio and one of only four accredited programs in the Tristate area. This achievement reflects our dedication and commitment to meeting national rehabilitation standards. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care for your child.

The Cincinnati Reds season is just around the corner....and Dr. Pruitt visited Mr. Red to hopefully give the team some good luck and a trip to post season play that has escaped us for too many years.

It's February and must be Therapeutic Recreation Month. We would like to recognize our TR's, Megan Randolph and Emma Neltner for the work they do to get our patients ready to reenter the community after their inpatient rehab stay. It definitely takes a lot more effort and thought to get back into the community after an injury or complicated diagnosis, and our TR's are there to make it happen. As well, they get the patients back to doing the fun things they enjoy as well as work as a team with the other therapists and health care professionals. Hats of to you both for your great work on Inpatient Rehab!

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Pruitt on his recent election as Vice Chair of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). Dr. Pruitt is exceptionally well-suited for this role, given his extensive background in leading medical education efforts in the field of PM&R and his associated leadership roles within the ACGME. His election to this significant leadership position during his first term as Board Director is a rare and remarkable achievement in the history of the Board. This speaks volumes about the respect and trust he has quickly garnered from his fellow board members. Way to Go, Dr. Pruitt!

Chevy Is Retiring! After 8 and a half years of compassionate work with patients and families at CCHMC, our dear Chevy is moving into his much-deserved retirement. Along with his handlers, Chevy has been a pillar of the facility dog program. He worked with long term patients across all of units at main campus and was the first dog host of “Dog Tales”. It is safe to say when you think of the facility dog program, Chevy comes to mind. It feels impossible to articulate the difference Chevy has made across our institution, but his contributions are a shining example of why our furry friends are more than “just dogs.” Chevy has sat with families on their hardest days, helped patients feel brave in the face of adversity, shown love to staff when things feel heavy, and so much more. His gentle nature and playful spirit have been a source of comfort for so many families and staff, with his presence often providing what words cannot. Though things will certainly feel different at CCHMC for all who have had the privilege of loving Chevy, we know he will enjoy his hard-earned rest.
Good boy, Chev.

FIRST Program: Recent FIRST Program graduate, Ellie, is not only back to living her best 12-year-old life after conquering CRPS and FND but was also chosen to sing in the newest- tug at your heart strings - Apple AirPod Pro 2 commercial. Ellie is especially proud to be chosen as the featured voice for this product as they have a function allowing the user to use them as a hearing aid. After being in the hospital alongside patients with spinal cord and brain injuries, she has been advocating for equal accessibility and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Ellie would like to thank Brittany Knapp, music therapist for lugging a piano to her room so she could enjoy singing and playing while in the program. We are proud of you, Ellie!

Results of Our Recent CARF Accreditation: It is our pleasure to announce that we have received the final report of our CARF site visit from our recent survey. It was confirmed that we have ZERO recommendations and will be awarded a full 3-year accreditation in our:
• Pediatric Specialty Program
• Brain Injury Specialty Program
• Cancer Specialty Program
• FIRST Specialty Program

Also, an exemplary conformance was awarded for our institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program. This level of recognition indicates a practice that produces outstanding business or clinical results and/or is innovative or creative and beneficial to share with the field. It is also a rare occurrence for CARF to designate an exemplary conformance and we are so proud of the work. Thanks to our colleagues in our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team.

Things to note why this was such a spectacular survey:
• Only 3% of surveys by CARF will receive ZERO recommendations
o Overall, CARF Surveys 4000 sites per year. 120 will receive ZERO recommendations
o For Medical Rehabilitation, CARF Surveys 425 sites per year. 13 will receive ZERO recommendations.
• Our program has received ZERO recommendations in 2015, ONE recommendation in 2018, ONE recommendation in 2021 and ZERO in 2024. A total of TWO recommendations have been offered to our program in four surveys!
• Exemplary status has to be reviewed at several CARF Leadership levels after the survey is completed, with supportive documentation from the survey team. It is rare this status is awarded.
• Post survey, our CARF Specialist noted “You must realize that your Cincinnati Children’s Inpatient Rehab Programs are the best in the world, as reviewed and surveyed and based on the CARF Medical Rehab Standards.”

We are certainly proud of our team as it is an overall effort, all the time, that allows us to reach this status.

Inpatient Rehab Receives Top Unit of the Year Award! Very exciting to be recognized as the Top Unit of the Year between the units at Burnet and Liberty campuses. We love what we do, our patients and families, and the team we get to work with each day. Does it get any better than this?

The Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award 2024: There were 13 nominees for this year's Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award which recognizes individuals with exceptional Compassion, Communication and Collaboration. The award went to Michelle Michels. The following was noted in the award presentation:

This year’s honoree is known for her unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of her patients, their caregivers, and her colleagues. This commitment has helped transform the lives of patients who are experiencing some of the most difficult life-changing events. She brings unparalleled energy to her work, driving her relentless pursuit of creative solutions and collaborative efforts to enhance the care we deliver.

She exemplifies compassion in every interaction and possesses a remarkable ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Her exceptional ability to understand each patient's personality and motivations allows her to build deep connections. She isn't hesitant to bring humor and joy into interactions, using silliness to foster trust and comfort among her patients.

Recently a school-aged girl on our unit expressed her love for horror movies, especially the "jump scare" moments. During the parade celebrating the end of her rehabilitation stay, Michelle didn't just join in singing and waving pom poms like everyone else. Instead, she surprised the girl by jumping out from behind the nurses' station, perfectly timing a scare that left a lasting, joyful memory on her last day on the rehabilitation unit.

Michelle, your compassionate care, and the joy you bring to the lives of your patients and your colleagues makes you truly deserving of the Doug Kinnett Golden Heart Award.

Congratulations, Michelle, well deserved!

And the FIRST Award for FUNctional Excellence goes to...Debbie South and Ryan Hanna! Debbie and Ryan are instrumental in assuring that FIRST patients can flourish when returning to school, and the community. They put tremendous effort into working with schools, parents, and patients to set each patient up for success. Much of the School Liaison work is done behind the scenes. Debbie and Ryan are exceptional at reading between the lines and decoding the culture and expectations of each school. They treat every patient as a unique individual and create successful pathways for return to school. Finding the right balance where school accommodations are either a benefit or a hindrance to independence and functioning is a masterful skill of our school liaison team. For example, we recently had a FIRST patient from Arkansas who had no special services or accommodations from the school system, when those should have been in place. The school liaison team tirelessly followed up until staff at the school fully understood the need for accommodations, and helped them create a plan for appropriate support for this individual. After receiving services, this patient blossomed! This is just one example of the incredible work they do. Thank you for all your amazing contributions to the FIRST program and beyond, Ryan and Debbie! Please help us congratulate Debbie and Ryan!

It's THAT time of Year....when we have to say a fond farewell to some of our fellows and residents we have embraced as a part of our Inpatient Rehab family. Jeremy Shapiro actually left us last year to do an extension of his fellowship with Sports Medicine, but will be joining Cincinnati Children's as an attending for both PM&R and Sports Medicine. Anisa Tatini will also be staying with Cincinnati Children's as an attending with a focus on cerebral palsy, general rehab and spasticity. Finally, Mary Craig has accepted a position as an professor with Pediatric Rehabilitation with Hawaii Pacific Health at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, and and associate professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Best wishes to you all! It has been a great ride with you as we worked side by side on the inpatient rehab team!
