Cutting the lens. The roughing wheel takes the lens to a few millimeters larger than the shape followed by the bevel wheel which cuts to size. The polishing wheel adds a smother finish to allow a high luster polish. A safety bevel at the end takes off the sharp edge.

Before the edger cuts the lens measurements are taken from the front and back surfaces to map out the lens thickness and bevel placement.

Prescription lenses are inspected to ensure the powers match the order. Lenses are spotted at the prescribed power. Next, the lenses are blocked (a plastic block is adhered to the lens using a special pad) so the edger can hold the lenses while cutting.
