🤣🤣 …. All jokes aside, here’s a true tip for your Thursday…

Do you experience back pain with daily demands? (Bending, lifting, standing, walking, rolling over in bed, etc?) One simple way to begin to control your symptoms is by activating your core (tighten your belly muscles, but don’t hold your breath!) BEFORE the movement and MAINTAINING the core engagement during the activity.

Core strength is foundational. Just as building your house on a solid foundation is very important, so is having a strong and stable core. The core (abdominal and back musculature) is quite literally the center of your body and pain and/or dysfunction of the core can create a chain reaction of pain and dysfunction in the upper and/or lower body as well.

*Modifications to your daily demands are most likely warranted in addition to proper core stabilization training! Our therapists are trained to assess your daily activity and suggest modifications as appropriate. Our knowledgeable therapists can also guide you on appropriate progression of foundational core strength as well for long term pain control!

Poor posture affects many of us these days. Working a desk job, sitting in class/studying/doing homework, gaming, mindlessly scrolling on our phones, traveling, crafting, watching sports or binging your favorite TV show, etc…We’re bound to forget about our posture during these activities which can lead to headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain and the lack of movement leaves us feeling stiff.

Here’s a couple simple tips to help!

🔸Check in with yourself periodically - Starting to feel discomfort or pain in your neck/shoulders/low back? Pretend there’s a string attached to your head and it’s gently pulling you straight up to get you back in good posture.

🔸Get up periodically and walk or stand and stretch if you can. Set a timer if needed. Shown below are just some of the many ways to stretch for better posture. (Created with HEP2go.com)

If you need more help with your posture, we’d love to facilitate your journey! We can assess and create a strength and flexibility regimen that’s just right for you!

Public pools may be closed for the season, but did you know?…

Circleville PT has a membership with the Pickaway County YMCA to be able to offer aquatic therapy to our patients (with a prescription)!

In lots of pain or balance issues making movement on land challenging?
Aquatic therapy may be great for you! The buoyancy of the water reduces the weight bearing impact on the body by 50-90% depending on the depth of water we work in. The resistance of the water also promotes strengthening as well as body control to stabilize yourself with the water movement around you.

A prescription for aquatic therapy is needed to get started!

Should I use heat or ice? This is one of the many questions we get asked frequently.

Heat therapy is great for:
✨Chronic muscle tightness
✨Chronic pain/aching joints/Arthritis/Cramps
✨Pre-exercise to improve ROM and tolerance to activity

Heat increases blood flow to the applied area, promoting healing and flexibility.

Cold therapy is great for:
✨New injuries/Newly post op
✨Reducing swelling and inflammation
✨Pain control by numbing the area

Place a protective layer between your skin and the hot or cold pack and ice/heat no more than 10-20 minutes at a time to protect your skin from damage or burns.

🚨Disclaimer! The decision of whether to use ice or heat (or not) can also vary based on personal preference, tolerance and medical conditions including but not limited to: Diabetes, Raynaud’s, (neurological conditions affecting sensation), uncontrolled blood pressure, active Cancer. The above info is generalized for the public. Ask your doctor or PT if you have any concerns or are unsure. 🚨

Getting in the pool is a great way relax and stay cool this summer! It’s also a great way to so you can enjoy the summer or your vacation while also working towards crushing your goals!

The water makes it easier to tolerate exercises if you struggle with pain due to the buoyancy, creating low impact and ease of movement compared to on land.

There are SO many different exercises you can do in the pool regardless of your fitness level. Ask your therapist today for a routine designed for you!

*If you are post op - ask your surgeon first! Most surgeons want your incision to be fully closed to reduce risk of infection!
