Language Is Literacy SLP at The TALK Team Sacramento

Language Is Literacy SLP at The TALK Team Sacramento Speech and Language Therapist focusing on communication and literacy intervention for children. In my practice I focus on language and literacy.

There is a strong connection between language and literacy. In order for children to be successful with reading acquisition and comprehension, they must understand language. That is where we, the SLPs, can help.

Kids deserve strong voices, strong language, and strong literacy.

Reading doesn’t develop naturally for most children, it’s built on language. When kids struggle with sounds, vocabulary, or understanding language, reading becomes hard too.

Through structured literacy, explicit, systematic instruction that teaches:
• speech sounds
• how sounds connect to letters
• word reading and spelling
• vocabulary and comprehension

We don’t “wait and see.” We build the foundation step by step so kids can become confident readers and communicators.

This work is bigger than speech.
It’s brain-building. It’s literacy. It’s life skills

💡Did you know our brains aren’t naturally wired for reading?

🧠 How the Brain Learns to Read

Reading doesn’t happen in just one part of the brain. It’s a team effort between systems that work together to help children become confident readers:

👁️ Visual Word Recognition – noticing letters and word patterns

🔤 Sound Processing – connecting letters to speech sounds

🧠 Word Memory – storing words so reading becomes automatic

💬 Meaning – understanding vocabulary and ideas

✂️ Syllables & Word Parts – breaking big words into manageable chunks

When one area needs extra support, you might notice:
• Slow or effortful reading
• Guessing at words
• Difficulty sounding words out
• Spelling challenges
• Reading words but not understanding the story

Reading develops through strong connections between these systems, and the great news is, these skills can grow with the right support and instruction.

What’s on the menu this week??!
We are breaking out Sneezy the Snowman and hitting so many speech, language and literacy goals with this one book!
This is my absolute favorite way to work on goals in therapy especially with mixed groups!!
Remember to teach the skill before data! It’s a good time to get post break baselines as well!
What’s on your menu this week?

SLPs don’t just work on speech sounds. We assess and treat how children process sounds, connect them to letters, store words in memory, and use language efficiently for reading and writing.

If a child is guessing words, reading slowly, struggling with spelling, or feeling frustrated, those are often language-based red flags, not a lack of effort.

Supporting phonemic awareness and orthographic processing helps build accurate reading, stronger spelling, and confidence.

Early, targeted support can make a meaningful difference. 💛📚
There’s no tiptoeing around it!!

When I hear you all are working on phonemic awareness and orthographic processing at the SAME time.. it gives me the flutter-flies!!!
