Support pay parity for Naturopathic Doctors in Oregon!

The reimbursement rate for NDs is 10-50% compared to other provider types for many insurance plans. At the same time our schooling, business overhead, and cost of living are the same and we usually spend 2-3x the amount of time with our patients during visits.

HB 4006 would create pay parity for NDs in Oregon. Similar bills have sadly stalled in the State legislature before and we don't have much time to get HB 4006 passed.

The 2022 short legislative session ends on March 4th. The Ways and Means committee appears to be stalling on moving HB 4006 to sub-committee. We need your help by letting the committee members and your state Representative and Senator know this is a priority.

HB 4006 "ND Health Insurance Pay Parity" has passed the House Health Care Committee and is waiting to be scheduled at Ways and Means, the state's budget committee. This is the "short" legisltive session. It will all be over on March 4th.We need your help ASAP to get this bill to move. Using the form...

Did you know your insurance doesn't pay providers fairly?

The reimbursement rate for NDs is honestly much lower than 50% for many insurance plans. At the same time our schooling, business overhead, and cost of living are the same and we usually spend 2-3x the amount of time with our patients during visits. It just doesn't add up and NDs in Oregon are dropping their insurance contracts or leaving the profession because they can't make a living wage. Sadly, this also affects patient access to naturopathic medicine, especially for patients with Medicaid.

I hope you'll consider taking a quick moment to contact your local reps to ask that they support this upcoming bill. It just takes a quick second and would mean a lot!

HB 4006 "ND Health Insurance Pay Parity" The House Health Care Committee hearing on this bill is at 8AM, Friday February 4th. ACT NOW! This Fair Pay bill is desperately needed in Oregon. Health insurance has been paying NDs as little as 50% of what they pay every other healthcare provider for each d...

I finally got around to this today and am so glad that I did! My lungs already feel happier.

The air quality in our area continues to be in the hazardous zone, which means that it's unhealthy to breath even if you have no underlying health conditions. Stay safe and stay inside as much as possible.

Steam your home!

This arid air has NW Oregonians’ sinuses bleeding and our skin feeling chapped. The smokey scent of even our indoor atmosphere has our nervous systems on high alert. The DIY home fix? Home steams.

Put a big pot of water in the stove and toss in a handful of whatever aromatic plant you have in abundance — lavender, rosemary, oregano, mint, catnip, cinnamon, eucalyptus, doug fir, or (pictured) western red cedar. Bring to a boil, then simmer throughout the day. This will moisten your respiratory system and chill out your body’s fight-or-flight response.

(Please don’t leave anything unattended on your stove, especially now. Also, it’s not recommended to leave gas stoves on long-term during this air quality event, so gas stove folks should bring to a boil, then leave uncovered for a while to slowly evaporate. Re-boil every hour or whenever is convenient.)

Good luck out there, y’all. Keep indoors and use your air filters if you have ‘em.

My heart goes out to all those across Oregon and the entire western U.S. who are dealing with evacuations, smoke inhalation, and loss right now due to the wildfires.

The smoke is thick right now in Clackamas County so remember to stay indoors when possible, avoid exercising outdoors, and wear a well-fitting N95 mask if you do need to be outside.

Here are some other helpful tips from San Francisco Natural Medicine for dealing with wildfire smoke

We hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and well. Our hearts go out to the communities affected by these devastating wildfires. While the immediate threats to life and property are the foremost concern, smoke particles have an impact on our lungs and well-being. Outlined below are key notes

Starting June 24th Oregonians in seven counties, including Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington, will be required to wear face coverings in public places.
😷
COVID-19 will likely be part of our reality for the foreseeable future. As Oregon continues to reopen, face coverings remain one of the most important things that we can do to slow community spread of COVID-19.
😷
And don't forget the basics like washing your hands and maintaining healthy physical distance from people not in your household.
😷
At some point we will be on the other side of this pandemic; if we all work together and do these simple things we can hopefully limit the total number of lives lost.

As states reopen during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many are seeing still-rising levels of new cases. Face masks might make all the difference.

Healing collective trauma requires recognition of disparities, community-level action in addressing them, and commitment to caring for all the factors of whole-person health. May we recognize the power each of us has to create such a world.

Once again, research shows what so many naturopathic doctors and our patients already know - natural medicine works and it works well, often with little to no side effects.

Researchers from Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute report that, "Supplements containing vitamins C and D, along with other micronutrients, can be a 'safe, effective and low-cost' means to fight off the novel coronavirus and other acute respiratory tract diseases."

What are you all doing to support immune resiliency right now?

Adrian Gombart of OSU’s Linus Pauling Institute, along with his collaborators at universities across the world, said public health officials should issue a clear set of nutritional guidelines to complement the existing advice about washing hands to prevent the spread of infections.
