Service Center for Independent Life - SCIL

Service Center for Independent Life - SCIL Stop DIS-ing your ABILITIES!!! Seek. Grow. Succeed. Our goal is simply to encourage people to make good choices and exercise control over their own lives.

To do this we will expand their access to information and resources, increase their independence, and improve the quality of their lives. We will work with anyone who comes to us regardless of disability, race, gender, life style, or religious persuasion. At present, 90% of our staff and 60% of our Board of Directors have significant disability. This gives us a unique insight into what our consumers face each day and permits us to effectively guide them in addressing their concerns, issues, and problems.

Hey there, everyone! SCIL would like to share some great news with you all! Thanks to our new partnership with VOCiC ( VOCIC-Medical we would like to share this post to recognize our Member, Becky P., from Pomona, as our first recipient to receive a mobile scooter. Ms. Becky reached out to our office and sat down with our Diversion Advocate, Amanda, to discuss her needs for a durable medical equipment item, also known as a DME item. Once the Intake process was complete and other eligibility requirements were met, our team was able to deliver and assemble her new scooter to her home. As you can see in the videos, assembly is quite easy and takes a few moments to put together. Please continue to follow our platform for more upcoming updates from Ms. Becky as she shares her feedback and testimonials of using her new VOCiC scooter.

Our Story

Service Center for Independent Life (SCIL) works with persons with disabilities of all ages. Since 1980 SCIL’s sphere of influence encompasses 22 cities in South East Los Angeles County, and the East San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. Services include but are not limited to: self-advocacy training, assistive technology, housing information, independent living skills training, peer counseling, benefits planning and information & referral services. All services are provided at no cost to SCIL consumers.

No other resource offers the same array of services and cross disability expertise provided by SCIL. The goal of SCIL is simply to encourage and support people to make good choices and exercise control over their own lives and provide expanded access to information and resources to assist them in increasing their independence. SCIL will work with anyone who comes to us regardless of disability, race, gender, life style, or religious persuasion. At present, 100% of our staff and 65% of our Board of Directors are people with disabilities, giving us a unique insight into what our consumers face each day permitting us to more effectively serve our consumers.
